Actually, there was a story about somebody selling 0-byte executable for DOS allowing you to resume programs because of some peculiarity.

Monospace fonts are fixed-width too and they don't look bad. The thing is that they're full-width.

Are there any reliable reports about size of LoL? All I've seen is Riot-made infographics without any backing. On the other hand http://steamcharts.com/app/570 seems trustworthy.

If we (as in democratic countries) don't keep outselves together because there are "worse things" (there always are) there will be no demoracies anymore in few dozens of years.

This is a standard construct in functional languages, probably why it's getting into C++14. This "|" is $ in Haskell with its arguments reversed. F# even has it in this particular order of arguments "|>" IIRC.

BM is too provably O(n + m) (and without dependence on alphabet size unlike KMP) if you apply two heurestics that I don't really remember. For some reason it's not mentioned on wikipedia.

You won't see (#a,b#) in client code, that's hidden behind the facade of a library, unless you are very desperate. Nor will you use pointers.

Haskell doesn't require you to do that by default. There is a warning flag for that, but in general language is okay with defining partial functions, more so than most languages (because laziness lets you cheat death).

It's not that much better on Linux. As a fan of Haskell it makes me sad.

One of points of the article is that if you write a+b then compiler is free to assume that no overflow happens. If the compiler was sufficiently smart then if you wrote if(checked_addr(a,b,rp)) { //something 1 } els

It just makes programs ambigious when reading. The amount of typing you save is the amount of type information the reader loses. It's okay if there's just one instance of IsString you're actually using, but if you're usi

IMO one of the most useful features of FP languages is type inference. I'm not sure you can cherry-pick that.

I used to be a fan of multiparadigmatic languages, because hey, I can do anything just the way I want, but then I heard Carmack during Quakecon say: "Languages talk about multi-paradigm as if it's a good thing, but multi-paradigm

Most of the time compiler can do without most top-level declarations too. They're a form of documentation enforced by the compiler.
