It's not a great solution, but I've found it beneficial to lean heavily on the Rust docs search bar when looking for specific behavior. It's very fast, and fuzzy enough that it finds what I'm looking for most of the time

Newtypes are actually zero overhead abstractions; one prominent example of Newtype is the structs Instant and Duration from std::time: https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/time/index.html

I understand how this could happen in theory, but is there historical evidence to show that this sort of DDOS would be in any way likely?

Not garbage collected languages per se; it's languages where data structures can't be value types[1], consequently consuming large amounts of extra memory because everything sits behind 2 or 3 or 5 layers of unnecessary 8-byte poi

Probably really old teams that had their scope change over time, with decades of technical debt, whose large controlling entities are too slow-moving to afford any kind of large refactor or rewrite in a more suitable language.

And even then, Perl and Ruby (heck, even Bash) have a semantic difference between double- and single-quoted strings. The only other popular general-purpose languages where they're synonymous are PHP, JavaScript, and Lua.

I'm not sure how much water his argument here holds anymore. C++ has changed A LOT since 2007; idiomatic C++11 is an extremely different language from C++03, and C++20 is almost unrecognizable to an early C++ developer.

C is king because the industry is currently dominated by people who have been doing this since before C++ was a thing. Additionally, most of these people are primarily electrical engineers, and don't have as strong of a background in c

I don't see Go as any sort of replacement for C. The fact that it's garbage-collected means that it's really not suitable for use in embedded or kernel programming. AFAICT, Rust was created to be a safer C, and Go was created

I think there's even another layer that goes with writing code that gets thrown away. Sometimes I end up doing that, but through that I gain knowledge of the problem that I probably couldn't have effectively gained any other way.

Because signed is default for some reason in most languages, and most developers aren't taught to think critically about how decisions like simple datatypes might affect scalability.
