Whatever happened to parallel NFS/pNFS? I know Panasas basically uses this + some of their own special sauce, but hasn't been clear to me if there is an open source implementation of pNFS that could approximate performance of Pana

It's an IBM commercial product, if that's what you mean by "IBM only". You can install it on any hardware though, we run it on a combination of SuperMicro, Dell, and DDN currently.

This makes me wonder - did the brighter light cause more crime to be committed, or did it cause more crime to be detected? A criminal must be caught for his crime to be recorded, after all.

I've always heard that adage in reference to performance/race driving or playing a musical instrument, never the military. Makes sense that it has wide ranging application though.

Oh sure - to be clear, the "better insurance to boot" was just my paraphrasing of the author. I fully agree with the idea that it is hard to directly compare whether a particular insurance in 1987 is better or worse than a particu

I would argue that far from the concept of 'freedom' not meaning anything, it means many things - it's heavily overloaded. For example - I have the freedom to reply to your comment if I choose. The concept of freely choosing

The author has phrased it awkwardly, but he's saying his insurance costs have increased more than 24x. He pays a monthly rate that is double his yearly rate in 1987, and had better insurance in 1987 to boot.

I read this comment before the article. I also assumed that the surgeon was male - my best guess at an answer to the riddle was in the wording: the people in the car crash were "a father and daughter" not "a father and his da

For iCloud, you actually can use iCloud Drive via a web interface from other OSes - I think the biggest limitation is actually that you can't share arbitrary files, only certain types of files (Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Notes, Photos).

Consider adding a demo account to http://productivity.netlify.com/ . I don't really want to sign up/create an account to try out a demo instance. You'll get more feedback here without that barrier.

Thanks - haven't heard of Gitter, came to the comments to ask about the potential impact to Mattermost. Sounds like there's room for these two to coexist within GitLab.

This is the type of insight that I come to HN for. As someone who is drinking whiskey now and will be drinking coffee in 12 hours, I couldn't agree more.

More wood = bigger bow. Shoot fewer arrows harder, i.e. more resources behind fewer projects, i.e. quality over quantity.

Hmm, good point, looks like you can export individual notes as PDF, but that's it. I use the Workflow app on iOS, and I have a feeling it would be relatively trivial to write a workflow that loops through all your notes and writes them

Purely out of curiosity - what do you find remarkably bad about Apple Notes? For context, I use Apple Notes frequently but not regularly (~100 notes over four years) and suspect my use is not heavy enough to uncover limitations.

I came of age in IT around 2005/2006, and it took me a really long time to connect the "scuzzy" people were talking about with SCSI as written. I always kinda liked the pronunciation though, once I figured out what it was ref

I disagree that the pink car driver was not paying attention - he or she was likely turning to look over their right shoulder before making the lane change. The drift to the right isn't an avoidance maneuver executed lazily, but just a
