One of the VPs at my prevoous companies used to sit in on our quarterly hackathons and build something. Made him a fantastic and well regarded engineering manager.

I currently work under an MBA manager. It is very frustrating. Deadlines are unrealistic, micromanagement is the norm, and if things don't go according to their deadlines they threaten.

Any system where they control entry not just by a passing threshold but by raw numbers or on a curved exam scale is a monopolistic regime. They aren't just looking for people who can pass the test and meet qualifications but to keep a

As a data warehouse engineer, the one area I see the most over engineering is in analytics platforms. Data layers on top of data layers, complex ETL processes, complex front end code written in the hippest new JS library, etc. Really what y

The purity of it seems like it would allow for easier manufacturing in space. Thus you can build components, especially the larger bigs, without having to expensively send them up from the earth's surface.

Still having issues with AWS related packages not being fully ported. A lot of our workflows in Pandas broke. It operates quite differently in Python 3 for certain operations like typing data frames which messed up some of our ETL. Also, mo

It still is because the consequences of losing a job are far worse for an H1B candidate than others. Not to mention those stuck in green card processing limbo who are put in bad spots by employers that can shift them around and reset their

Shiny is slowly expanding its dashboarding capabilities. I have rolled out dashboards with hundreds of thousands of rows which don't need any explicit pagination and can be used simultaneously by dozens of internal customers. All this

I just took 4 days off work. I got a text from my boss saying some of our ETL jobs failed and I had to take a look at them.

Starting a company involves so much marketing. SEO, SEM, etc. In the SEO domain, you need to pay a lot of attention to blogs and sites like Moz, rank tracking with services like getstat, make sure you aren't doing anything blackhat.

This equation was the first serious attempt to quantify the number of civilizations in our universe. As we explore Europa and others, we will get some serious data points to improve our understanding of the origin of life in the universe.

Not to join a flame war, but R makes it pretty easy to test multiple models on a single dataset as well. I have also noticed it does better stats and missing data handling out of the box.

Someone who can build models and someone who can scale it are 2 different people and professions. Data scientist vs data engineer.

Does anyone here have experience in dealing with scaling? It seems like this is the biggest problem with Shiny. Since R is in general slow and single threaded, Shiny apps have a major limitation.

Seems like unions benefit just the insiders and seniors. One reason why I am skeptical when people say unions built the middle class. Employer competition probably does more for that than unions.
