Actually most of them aren’t, but instead they are only supersonic… Making hypersonic missiles (speeds over Mach 5) is a hard problem due to changes in airflow at that speed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypersonic_spe

[My first attempt at an ELI5…] This is needed for massive ML models. GPT-3 for example has 175 billion parameters. The model training job simply won’t fit on a single processor’s memory by itself. To calculate these models, the bigger job h

15 kW per tile, 12 tiles per rack… 180kW per rack at 480V three-phase is 375 amps per rack. Jesus. Good luck finding a rack that can support that. Either you build your own rack (and this could be Tesla’s plan, but I couldn’t find details o

On my iPad this is a problem. On my desktops, I have Firefox with Tridactyl installed, turning off the tab bar, nav bar, and menu. Everything is handled via keyboard if I can help it, including tab navigation: with a single keystroke I can

The best way I’ve seen it described as it is in a way a digital “baseball card”. Baseball cards in and of themselves have no value, just text on a piece of cardboard, and if it is of the same player, they are mostly fungible. But, if the ba

The authorities actually have wide latitude... there was one case where a house was destroyed in pursuit of a fugitive, LegalEagle did a whole show on it: https://youtu.be/Dk8QO6jE5dA

If browser performance is bad but app performance is good (and I agree that my experience with the app is actually pretty good), then it is a bad sign that the exploit is in the app, and not the browser version.

I use fzf in this very way and could have written this article if I weren’t lazy lol. However, I can add two other use cases: 1. I use i3wm at home (haven’t yet made the jump into Sway/Wayland), and don’t want to change my screen resol

I had forgotten how sleazy many of the 48 laws of power actually are. Important to know them to recognize the tells in others. A pertinent example is the very next “law”: “7. Get others to do the work for you, but always take the credit.”

I liked the article, but I don’t understand how it handles interrupts? Wouldn’t signal handling imply a global nursery? Another discussion discussed logging, which would also imply a global nursery. If a SIGHUP hits the process, how does th

There is an interesting game I played in the past week called MHRD that has you start with NAND gates and gets you all the way to a CPU, challenging you to use as few NAND gates as you can each step. That was pretty fun and reinforced some
