   Would you not say that "next" is a variable, and the value, the thing, that "next" contains is a hash? "Next" is, of itself, not a function, surely.

   Thank you for the reply - interesting. Just to clarify, saying that my friend is not a programmer was meant to set expectations, not to be disparaging. My friend write short scripts to accomplish specific tasks, but is not employed to writ
