I like to use social engineering when I need to reach top bloggers, and sometimes lie... "I'm facing a crisis, give me some advice... blah blah" Then 5 months later, tell them "Thanks so much for your life changing advice, it inspired me to

Most people have the mentality the ENTIRE product should be built with $5000, let alone a prototype. Of course, this probably doesn't matter to you since you'll get 2-3 ppl who understand the economics and time involved, and you won't get o

There's many things to do pre-launch. For a consumer product, they can include: 1) Starting a blog and establishing yourself as an expert. At the very least, at least get some content out there for search engines to crawl. 2) Establishing y

Yeah, but I'm talking about something more general and less hacker nature. More like a dating/social thing than an expertise request. HNOfficehours seems more very rigid. Some people just want to meet new people, and make a potential friend

I totally agree. The best case scenario is to make a product that is useful for 1 user, but becomes even more useful as more and more users use it. The best example is FourSquare. You can check in, and earn badges, but as you tell more and

Writers think it's the writing that makes a startup successful. Engineers think it's the good, well-organized, efficient code. Salespeople think it's their clever, shrewd selling strategy. Management think it's their leadership.

They're definitely not more important. The actual stakeholders come first b/c they were the ones who took on the most risk. Second came the employees who took a job for a company that might not even have existed in a year. Third came the so

They dun even need to do anything except put a link to their new service on their main domain and it already gives them an instant boost. Which they already do for 99% of all their related services.

No need for proof, just intuition. Think about it: they can create any new website and instantly give it good Pagerank/TrustRank/whatever by internally linking to it from the Google.com domain. They dun even need to manually boost it.

This isn't really a startup acquision - more like a talent acquisition. Google can easily create a similar service, and since they are the gatekeeper, they could just pump their site in front of everyone else in the rankings (like they do w

What's Octopart's backup strategy if Google somehow punishes their site in their next algorithm change (ala so many other innocent sites during the Panda Update)? I bet 80% of the traffic comes from search engines. If those 80% leave, it's

I'm not suprised TheLadders scrapes results from other sites. Otherwise their database would be almost empty. Hardly can you find an employer willing to disclose salary and say this job is paying 100K and more.
