I know they considered “keyed” hooks, but that api is a lot more verbose since you need to key _every_ hook you use, and hooks internally need to create a sub-hook context / namespace to avoid collisions which either needs to be manage

Python (out of the box) will only complain about missing variables or methods at runtime.

I’m in the process of converting a large knockout app to react and computed values are definitely what I miss most. They’re defined on the class (normal react practices prefer everything to be a plain object), they can reference other value

I don’t think it was done for performance, hooks just compose much better than class components. Definitely a trade off in terms of blank-slate intuition, but it unlocked a lot of things in the realm of reusability.

I had the same experience with go, 100x performance improvements on data crunching scripts with roughly the same code. Worst part of writing it in python was simple misspellings in the last stages of the computation breaking things.

I think it was more describing the rationale of the specific vegetarians/vegans; some do it more for health reasons, some for environmental/ethical reasons.

Go is very simple, provides decent static type safety, has a nice concurrency model, and compiles to fast static binaries across all major platforms. People choose it all the time because it’s a great choice. A wild number of popular open s

The skypanel is really really bright. The link says the 360 gets 80 lumens per watt, which is right around what LED bulbs get.

I think everyone agrees repaying money you borrow is the moral and right thing to do, but pragmatically bankruptcy acts as a governor on lending. In every other industry (including someone lending money for you to buy a tow truck) they need

If the 1.6 trillion in debt was divided evenly among every human in the US it would be 4k. If we’re ball-parking and say that the top 20% of earners would foot the bill it’d be about 64k per household.

I feel like this works for housing but not really for land? As density increases the cost of housing should go down (more houses), but the cost of land would go up (ability to build more houses on the same plot). I’m imagining the house fro

Look at any field that’s somewhat prestigious but oversaturated enough that owners can pay poverty wages and you’ll find a ton of rich kids trying to live their dream! See art, film, journalism, architecture, political staffers. Can you bla

Maybe we’re talking about different demographics? This is true of trust fund kids, but there’s a huge range of parental support. Most people I know have moving home as a safety net for homelessness, but they would be waiting until their par

To expand on this, many of the things that hooks now make easy were bespoke per-class implementations with details that leaked into every lifecycle hook. Think of how you’d write a chain of useMemo calls in a class component to see just how

It’s not that they’re fashionable, it’s that their ergonomics have improved significantly over the past decade. I saw dynamic types as a response to cumbersome static type systems, but increasingly type systems are becoming more expressive

They could have been a much more powerful primitive, but not having generics means tons of boilerplate; all basic channel patterns involve a lot of copy pasting.

I was in a semi-rural suburb of San Antonio, Texas. We had a CS class, our academic decathalon team team placed 6th in state (I was a C but placed 3rd in individual), and I took a lot of AP science and math so I spent a lot of time with the

I knew many people who fit that description, but with even a little social intelligence it seemed to me their experiences in highschool were pretty great; they weren’t nerds, they were just smart and studious and many were very well liked.

Same, born in 92 and his characterization of being nerdy and young seems super antiquated. “Nerdy” interests don’t make you a social pariah, they transcend groupings all together; the star quarterback plays dnd, the head cheerleader builds

This is called out in the article; infrastructure is capital intensive, so, unless the resulting infrastructure is actually a good investment, you’d get more bang for your buck (in terms of a jobs program) just handing out money.

I noticed trueskill is pretty effective at matching people together, but the stickiness of rankings makes it frustrating if it’s user facing. People want to see the number next to their name change after 4 consecutive wins.
