I think a missing piece is making materialized views fast since there will always be cases where someone wants to denormalize to get around performance issues, even with well designed indexes.

I’ve been curious about it, but it’s difficult to wrap my mind around. I’ve read a lot of frank mcsherry’s blog posts, watched his videos, been through the book, and I guess it just hasn’t clicked for me! I also don’t have any use cases tha

This seems like a paradox since broadcasting viral mind destroying rage-bait is... free speech. So what you're suggesting seems like it necessarily involves curtailing free speech.

I had to provide a urine sample to get my ADHD medication. It was sold to me under the auspices of drug testing, even though ADHD meds are out of your system in 48h. A month later I received an explanation of benefits from my insurance comp

Seriously, I’ve had dentists differ in opinions by an order of magnitude. Turns out “necessary” is a pretty broad grey area.

I have three of their little speakers and a sound bar and I’m pretty happy. No connecting/disconnecting bluetooth, no walking out of range and the sound getting choppy, I can select which speaker I want to play directly from spotify or

I've been in San Antonio for the past 5 years and love it, even the heat. I actually got a job in NYC and was planning to move up, but my first day was the day they started wfh.

Yeah, typescript obviates so many assertions that using assertions for things that the compiler can’t catch isn’t too burdensome.

Pretty evil! I imagine the card companies have an explicit rule that, in order to accept their cards, a merchant can't charge their users any extra fee? I wonder if some regulation were created that bans rules like that from existence

I mean... that’s the point I was making. Interface is just like using a dynamically typed language. So saying python can do this but golang can’t is wrong. They are effectively the same. RE: Permutation, the unmarshalled value will only eve

Isn’t that JSON example the same in python, javascript, and ruby? Unmarshalling into an interface is really just a shitty enum; the number of permutations is finite. A type switch here is like a match but less type safe because it won’t che

There's a specialized algorithm specifically for running levenshtein distance over tens of thousands of strings called bitap[1]. I wrote an impl in rust a while back[2]. But your advice still applies! Run time scales with max distance.

Usability is a killer feature. It’s possible to build a website without understanding how to use the command line. I know I managed it when I was younger!

For me it was writing unit tests for python where you’re pretty much manually checking types. Or running slow one off processing scripts that fail at the last step because of an issue that static types would have caught. Writing the same th

I don't know a lot about terraform, but it sounds like they are very different things? Terraform talks mostly to cloud provider apis, ansible usually deals with running code on the servers themselves.

Rust uses error values and its error handling is pretty terse (and more type-safe), so this is more of an indictment against go than error values in general.
