That feels very inaccurate, the C/C++ extension for VSCode has 50 million downloads for example. Just anecdotally, most of the developers I know use VSCode for non-webdev things as well. I think you're underestimating the populari

If they're using semver, having a major version number of zero means that any change can be breaking. Additionally, while it's not part of the semver spec, to me having the minor version be zero as well is an even bigger indicator

That really really depends on what you want to do, can you add a bit more information? Also those choices are not mutually exclusive, you can run Clojurescript on Node.js, but you would probably be better off using normal Clojure.

I'm a data engineer, it's a fairly new role so it's not well defined yet, but most data engineers write data pipelines to ingest data into a data warehouse and then transform it for the business to use. I'm not sure why

I prefer having failures in the type signature so the type checker makes sure they're handled, although it depends on the failure, occasionally I just raise an error like you suggest.
