If you do not work on an important problem, it's unlikely you'll do important work. It's perfectly obvious. Great scientists have thought through, in a careful way, a number of important problems in their field, and they kee

“Revealed” implies that there is some sort of single source of truth for the image (as in your book example, where the source of truth is the original book, to which transcriptions could be compared for accuracy). That is not the case for p

No photo is a “straight out of camera shot”. When dealing with film, you make decisions about how to develop the film, print it, etc. You can make dramatically different results from the same latent image.

A big problem with these new AI techniques as applied to photography is that the algorithms tend to be very opaque, and typically gives very little control to the user. You can get better over time at using the dodge/burn tools, or sel

Any digital photography is by definition computational. You can make an argument that using deep learning to affect the sky is “more computational” in a way than a “basic” CCD to JPEG pipeline, but the boundaries become fuzzy and arbitrary.

It’s kind of sad to see the meal culture eroding in other parts of the world. The “quickly ingest some food at your desk so you can keep working” mentality has taken hold. I’m French, and at my first office job - almost 15 years ago - the e

Yes, curricula tend to focus on writing code over reading code, which is a shame. Looking at existing code, extending it, refactoring it, etc would ideally be something that students do as much as writing things from scratch.

Well yes. It all sounds all so easy when you put it like that. The problem is that, in my experience at least, you can’t just teach junior engineers how to go straight to phase 3. You have to go through phase 1 and 2 to really develop a sen
