Presumably because that's what most people actually read? Why should your particular taste in books be privileged over others?

I'd like to offer an empirical counter-point: Java. Java, while a good quality language overall, is deliberately missing some important features like function passing (possible these days...). This is an effort to make it easy to learn

A counterpoint: Ikea is effectively performing carbon sequestration. They plan fast-growing pine trees. Those trees remove carbon dioxide from the air. They chop down the trees and make furniture. The carbon is now locked up in that furnitu

I think you've misunderstood the comment you were replying to. I think they mean that the bacteria will not reach room temperature (20℃), but will get just warm enough to thaw out (1℃ or 2℃). The reason they could die is probably not h

I reckon most people choose PC or console (or both) based on 1) what their friends have 2) what games they like to play 3) backward compatability with existing games and 3) how much they value the convenience of consoles. I mean, surely it&

Other people have pointed out that most of the power comes from using Emacs. However, speaking as someone who used to use Notepad++ and Markdown, and now uses Emacs and org-mode, I do think .org is a slightly better markup syntax. I can

The thing is, org-mode is quite big. No new project will have implemented all of the features. For myself, I've never used narrow to subtree, but I was struck by the apparent lack of scheduling C-s, agenda view C-a a, tables (org-mode&

I've made quite a bit of use of Tangram JS (which I was very impressed by), and also of Mapzen's Open Street Map metro extracts and the IMPOSM project. Both very useful - thanks Mapzen. Hope everyone involved manages to find new w

While it's clear that nuclear is uneconomical now and in the near future, it's still not quite clear to me if we can do without it. Solar and wind are great, cheap options right now, and they've really outperformed what peopl

I wonder what Shakespeare would have thought of typewriters? Would we have gotten twice as many plays out of him? He was clearly slacking.

With frameworks, the more they do for you, the more risk you will end up fighting against them if you need to do something they're not designed for. Django isn't particular bad at this (it has some escape hatches to allow you to e

It's sort of in the opposite direction, but I like Paint.NET as a free Photoshop replacement. It's not nearly as featureful (as far as I know), but it's much faster, crashes less, and is vastly easier to use.

Over years I've heard a lot of complaints on tar being hard to use, but in real-life I really ever had to use only these two commands: zip and unzip. It's actually quite easy to remember: zip, and unzip.

It's an interesting thing to plot, but these numbers need more context. Deaths per person (ok, that number is always exactly 1, but hopefully you know what I mean...) seems like it would be a much more useful number to see, for example

I don't have much experience with Matlab, but I work with some analysts who write R, which I gather is quite similar. A good first step is to get on top of your external dependencies. I find analysts tend not to think about this too mu

I'd add that I think the correctness problems with (good) dynamic language really only start appear as the program gets larger. Dividing your program up into large chunks with rigorously defined and checked interfaces (e.g. using spec)

I think you have a point. The idea that the programming language and its standard library are lego bricks, and you have to find ways to assemble them into something resembling your problem can be hard to communicate. I've certainly see
