Sure but presumably you could buy as many $4000 handbags and watches as you want. If it’s not being tracked it would be hard to pick up.

Seems like the reason Australia dragged its heels on AML changes for property purchases. Propping the property market up was more important than stopping crime.

A card tx fee of around 1% is common. At 10% it’s tax evasion.

It used to be super common for many small businesses to be cash only or a 10% discount for cash. Likely the main driver for this was tax avoidance. I haven't seen a cash only business since covid. With a dwindling number of legitimate

I don't think it is overreach since its fairly simple to implement and non obtrusive. We have had multiple decades of failure from tech companies already to prove that they won't act on their own. If you are putting individual par

This put the power in the parents hands. They can set up their kids computer with a kids account and then all software and web services can just ask the OS if the user is an adult rather than all requiring their own ID verification.

That wouldn't help in the situations described in the article. For example where individuals buy drugs with small amounts of cash, then that cash is used to buy things like luxury watches and iphones, then those items are taken oversea

Another commenter noted that stalkers and ex partners could absolutely weaponise account takeover in a life threatening way. Tech companies don’t want to take responsibility for the incredibly sensitive data they have collected and are trus

I've been using the Apple USB-C multi port adapter thing since I got one free from a previous job, it seems overpriced since I can see a lot of similar ones much cheaper from competitors, but I've also never had an issue with it

Someone being able to take over your account, read your DMs, and impersonate you is pretty serious. Should be treated as a data breach with serious penalties.

Makes sense, new videos are where most of the streams are happening, I wouldn't be surprised if they start to reduce the number of transcodes to save space as a video drops in popularity. h264 will work on everything so they need that

I’d wait for some actual reviews before celebrating. Because I just doubt this is as good as they are hyping. And it will still run the same windows ad ridden broken OS. With 128gb memory this thing is going to cost a fortune.

Social media today is just designed to induce a zombie state where you sit for hours scrolling short form video and adverts. If it was destroyed entirely society would be better off.

The tech isn’t that expensive or complex. Email didn’t have to add all this junk to be sustainable. Something like the original Facebook where it’s just posts from your direct friends and no public content would be sustainable. It just woul

Personalised is too vague of a term. IMO what destroyed social media was ending the chronological friends feed. When social media stopped being photos from your friends and family and started becoming endless content creator posts and rageb

Somewhat, but somewhat not. Yes it's a very obscure format, and yes it's partially a marketing stunt from Google for their AI tools. But it's also a real bug which is exploitable on ffmpeg. And we have seen in the past that s

Even devices that don't aren't becoming obsolete. My M1 macbook does not have a hardware decoder and youtube seems to choose AV1 whenever it's available. The software decoder does not noticeably warm the laptop.

My TV lags out even when doing nothing. So I use it as a dumb panel and let another device handle the streaming and decoding. Also has the benefit of blocking LG from loading adverts all over the UI.

Youtube is doing this now. Most semi popular videos have an AV1 transcode, something interesting is I've seen youtube chooses to use the AV1 format even on my macbook which doesn't have a hardware decoder, I had a look at the CPU

PCs don’t need hardware encoders. There are no realtime jobs on these. You can let it encode in however long it takes. You need hardware encoders for things like cameras because they need to encode in real time since the buffer would quickl
