My concern is stiffer cables are likely more likely to rip USB ports off the PCB. A lot of devices provide very little support to the USB port which is basically just hanging off pads on the PCB, so a stuff heavy cable could provide a lot m

It’s much cheaper to just buy your cables from Apple or LTT knowing they tested them on a 6 figure testing rig. I throw out every usb cable that comes bundled with devices because they are literal junk.

It’s because you are using the lowest use case for usb (like most people). Literally everything can manage 65w power only. All of these “usb sucks” posts are about using multiple 4k 120hz monitors dasychained while pumping 140w and a handfu

It's the cost of the current nvidia hardware used to run these models. Of course all bets are off if you are accounting for some future chip that doesn't exist yet which could cost less.

Would depend on the income levels, but yeah, buying a new phone these days is entirely a non essential luxury. An iphone easily lasts 7 years so the moment money is tight, it's a very easy choice to not buy a new one.

Outside of this website I've never met a person who buys a new phone every year. It's closer to every 3-4 years for most people.

It costs something like $300,000 for the hardware to run a model of that size. You'd pay that for a single model for 1-2 years? Not even the AI companies can justify that kind of spend which is why they keep extending the expected life

These new datacenters aren’t for powering social media. All this extra capacity is for slop generators actively making the world worse.

Pretty much, disrupting datacenter builds is one of the few ways people can fight back against evil tech billionaires.

I don't expect linux phones to catch up to ios for the mainstream, but I can see them working for me. I usually carry an actual camera with me so I don't care much about my phone one other than random utility shots / photos o

The unalive thing I think is mostly down to silent deranking rather than regular moderation. People know certain things cause your posts to be deranked by the algorithm but you can’t know exactly what they are or when it’s happened. Which h

As far as I can tell, Passkeys is just like ssh keys for normal people. But there's a lot of implementation details which get confused with the base specification. They can be tied to hardware, they can be stored on a secure zone that

Thread is fairly similar to Zigbee, just standardized and doesn't require brand specific hubs. You can actually control thread devices direct from an iphone with no hub at all. Wifi for anything but cameras is a mistake, it only exists

Someone paying hundreds for a good cover design is a signifier that a lot of effort went in to the book and the cover reflects that. An AI cover signifies that this is a quick rush out the door cash grab book that likely isn’t worth reading

I had a click around Apple Passwords on macos and I could not find a way to move my passkeys to another app. I could only see a way to share them with other Apple Passwords users.

Depends. Steam is not DRM itself, you can open the game folder and copy the game to another computer and steam doesn’t care. The game often has its own DRM though which will stop you. GOG is different in that they ban DRM outright.
