I always overengineer my side projects, because it's way more interesting that way. I do side projects for fun and to learn something, both of which happen more easily when the project is overengineered.

The question is, what should be sacrificed in order to teach kids to code? They have a limited amount of time at school, so some other subject must be reduced significantly, to allow for enough time to actually teach them anything useful.

I ride my mountain bike 30+ all the time, it feels fine. It definitely makes me a bit more sweaty, but is a sustainable speed for a few kilometres at least especially if there is a bit of a slope.
