In Germany, we (via the grid operators) literally pay these power plants just for providing backup capacity. Another idea could be paying companies to stop consuming power in times of high demand. Things like cold storage facilities can eas

Solar and wind behave antiproportional most of the time. When there is less sun (due to clouds) there is more wind. With a little bit of overbuilding both energy sources, most of our energy needs could be compensated.

That's why it's wise to build both solar and wind, as they behave antiproportional most of the time. When there's more sun, there is less wind and vice versa.

Why aren't they investing massively into solar power? It's one of the cheapest energy sources currently available, and since a lot of the energy in Texas goes into cooling when the sun is shining, the load should perfectly match t

The internet tells me that split-ac systems (basically small heat pumps) have a life expectancy of 10-20 years. That's not too bad, for example an oil-based heating system (as we have in our german basement) also only has a life expect

Might just be me, but hiding that information behind a "license" link feels like you want to hide that you are just copying from Wikipedia. In fact, the Wikipedia current events section also has a pagespeed of 100, so what do we n

I have written to penguin and the other publishers on social media. Who knows, maybe it helps. I told them that the internet archive is important for research and academia and that I would not buy any books from them ever again if this laws

Unfortunately, Germany has been ruled by a conservative party for the last 16 years and they did everything in their power to sabotage renewable energy so that lignite mining could stay longer. However, heating in Germany is a difficult pro

That seems like complete bullshit, since Germany doesn't mine anything apart from lignite, which can't feasibly be transported. Do you perhaps have a source on coal export to Poland? Also, Germany exports more electricity than it

I use 6000/8000kWh between September and May though, because that is when I'm using a Heatpump to generate electricity.

This doesn't seem cost efficient at all, my (medium sized) house in Germany consumes about 3000kWh of electricity during winter. This does not include heating, which consumes another 15.000kWh (of heat energy from oil, so around 5000kW

This exists and is actually used in Germany, it is called "Eisspeicher" (ice storage). It is utilizing the effect that it takes a huge amount of energy for the water to go from solid to fluid, about the equivalent of heating water

I think its fair to ask for payment, but I think it should be waaaay cheaper. I know a few maintainers of really good, productive open source software, and some of them earn about 4000-5000€ per month from it. I feel like 1€ per month would

So according to Google one Beehive can produce 20-30kg of honey per year. For the 24 beehives in this machine that would be 720kg of honey max, selling for around 10€ per kg in Germany. That would make a maximum of 7200€ in one year, while

Any US based company can be forced to give up the data of European customers and be silent about it (see CLOUD act) so as far as I see it any US based company that adheres to the CLOUD act can not be GDPR compliant.
