Agree, ioctls are a good replacement of /proc for exposing simple, structured information to/from the kernel. It is still not perfect for all use cases though, especially because it forces you to operate in a _polling_ fashion. Pr

I generally agree with your comment, especially coming from OpenBSD where /proc does not exist, for reasons you mentioned, as well as a purely practical one: let's not pressure the VFS for no reason. I think the biggest issue with

I don't think you're comparing apple to apple here. You are talking about _forward looking_ performance. That is, how to improve performance from here. Performance reviews in most corporations is _backward looking_, it's abou

I struggle to find a simple, canonical example where that kind of condition could be useful. The examples in the paper seem a bit remote to me. Anyone came up with some enlightening examples?

It's the same for pretty much any language. There is nothing special about header files... > There’s no rule that they have to only contain declarations Same thing in Python, you can write statements at the top level of a module, an

What they describe looks like a single predictor. You can't create a strategy with a single predictor, unless it's incredibly predictive. 99% of the time, a predictor cannot beat its transaction costs alone. You need to combine hu

"point in time" means there should be a way to query past data _as it was_ in the past.

Did you actually work seriously with / inside 0MQ? It's indeed an intuitive library, but it's far, far from perfect, thus why it has been rewritten countless times by Sustrik (crossroads), then by D'Amore (nanomsg). The

I attended a presentation of the nouveau drivers at FOSDEM circa 2010. Until then I was quite supportive of the initiative. Then the presentation started, headed by two young guys, still students from what I understood. They basically expla

Getting a meaningful market share of browser usage is very hard. First, because most statistics are based on self reported user agent metrics from the top websites. But my parents don't go to Reddit, PornHub, YouTube or LinkedIn, etc.

I don't think the objective is realism here, but rather education. Also, I'm not convinced "rationality" is key in reaching realism.

You should start your comment with "As a top 5% computer-literate HN reader". To my parents, double clicking on "Internet Explorer" means "opening the internet".

I don't think your comment fairly represents the situation. Bash is not _just_ a scripting language, it's also (and primarily) a shell. That means it needs to be good at both interactive REPL-style usage _and_ at simple scripting.

This. Especially, docker does a lot of magic dynamically adding/removing iptables rules, which is already a nightmare to manage, so you really want to avoid dealing with more.

Things are somewhat different now than 5, 10, 20 years ago. There has been a wave of "individual accountability regimes" released by pretty much every regulator. I have worked with the SFC the most, so that's what I will desc

Honest question, does performance really matter all that much for a web framework? Internet latencies should be in single digit to low double digit milliseconds range. I would expect the slowest of web frameworks in bash to parse and route

I don't think it's a matter of putting one versus the other. If you can get away with smart pointers and such, life is beautiful, nothing wrong there! The debate here is rather for the cases where you cannot afford such things.
