Living my life is just everything I do? If I did all those things I’d live an extremely rich life, a lot better than what I’m currently doing, which is some mix of being addicted to the internet and watching all the interesting things get t

Unless you have access to the same compute limits as the guy at Anthropic, and the internal model they use, you probably would just have spent a lot of tokens without success. So you can take solace in that.

Surprisingly the (a, since multiple things have this name) Hopf conjecture was solved by human mathematicians around the same time. It’s the statement that S^2 x S^2 admits a positive sectional curvature Riemannian metric.

What’s wrong with aspiring to do any or even all of those things? Those sound like nice things.

Good. I want open source projects which serve infrastructure to be gate kept so that only responsible people are involved. Responsible people can use AI too. Get all of those people on board, and keep out irresponsible people!

Why would a secondary cultural goal take precedence over an apparently accurate description of what’s happening in the system? For one, you’re fighting some irrelevant battle.

No sir your take is the naive one. You’ve affirmed my position by pretending to deny it.

A well ordering on a set is a total order such that all non empty subsets have a minimum element with respect to this order. The standard ordering of the reals is not a well ordering, but the axiom of choice is equivalent to the statement t

If we assume the real numbers exist, then perhaps the paradox resolves because there are uncountably many reals and only countably many nameable things, but then perhaps the paradox does not resolve because we assume ZFC is true and we can

Our models of reality are incomplete. See this very nice Stephen Hawking lecture where he says as such https://www.hawking.org.uk/in-words/lectures/godel-and-the-e... People have thought they were nearly complete

Our trash heaps and empty buildings will outlive humans, and they probably have the same internal experience as the machines, so I don’t mourn or celebrate a new phase of evolution. Actually humans and other animals are the only things in t

“you will also hold that when you have digitally modeled a brain such that the model responds to its inputs as a brain does, then you have built a brain.” What is this then?

It doesn’t take massive intelligence to sit on all the capital and charge rents. The owning class isn’t going to just give up control because the AI could run things better than them.

“digitally modeled a brain such that the model responds to its inputs as a brain does” If in responding to its inputs it experiences consciousness (=lights are on, experiences senses, perceives qualia), then you’ve built a brain. If your mo

There’s no conspiracy theory. Jimmy Carter spent the last decade of his life talking about this. Bernie Sanders talks about this all the time. Noam Chomsky talks about this. Ralph Nader was talking about this forever. Go listen to Ian Shapi

It could be that the ratio of the amount of context required for a good decision to happen to the amount of context an entity is willing or able to provide is not high enough. E.g. the AI might dictate my life better than me if I upload eve

Is it really that far-fetched? Computer viruses came about in 1971, just a few years after the invention of arpanet. It’s probably happening right now.

I don’t think you do either, but that doesn’t mean these people aren’t going to build a ton of data centers on that narrative. Actually I think the AI revolution is going to have a worse outcome. It will kill off the ladder to a better life

If by neuron based you mean the biological neuron, then I agree. If you mean an arbitrary substrate which models every aspect of a neuron we are aware of, I’m not sure. I think it would be more surprising if it’s impossible to do processing

Denying that consciousness exists is pretty bold. It’s obviously completely wrong since it’s the only thing we can actually know exists, but I’ll give you that it’s bold.
