Lotus 1-2-3, et al, were killed by MS Office. But Lotus Notes was still selling 20+ million seats a year in 2000. The web killed Notes, not Microsoft.

I was a developer on versions 2 through 4.5. I agree with the main point of the article: Lotus Notes was breaking new ground, and we sometimes landed on suboptimal designs because we didn't have a prior example. And once we had a desig

I don't get that. If I sometimes decline and sometimes accept, then I'm picking. Unless you're saying that they should have declined the Denali change, but then does that mean they can never accept a change? Names are locked

I personally would rather have a democratically-elected government--no matter how awful--pick names rather than have corporations pick names. Also, I was curious, so I looked it up: Congress passed a law (Public Law 80-242) in 1947 that all

My hope as an American is that China's growing power will bring Europe and the US closer together. It's true that MAGA craziness has pushed Europe aways from us. But, ironically, Europe increasing defense spending and standing up

I disagree. We're in a multiplayer game, so we're all player characters. I certainly try not to treat others as NPCs in my story.

I do agree with this attitude, but the epithet of "being an NPC" is about having someone else--the media, your tribe, your church--governing your behavior without you thinking about it. It's not about being a main character i

Everyone is playing hardball. No one wants to be IBM in an IBM-Microsoft dance. But this is kind of like banning GPU exports to China. It will encourage them to develop their own technology. Yes, it will take them longer, but in the long-ru

Okay, I admit I underestimated the container ship benefits. 80+ MW is a lot of power and you get easy cooling to boot. Fuel cost is a problem (relative to solar), and you can't do inference on it, but it might make sense for training.

Sure, but it's like someone saying, "I could care less" or "I literally died". I understand the meaning, but it's still ugly. And, of course, I should say that this is just how it struck me. Other people may no

You can't deploy enough solar panels on a container ship to feed the datacenter, and a nuclear reactor, while not impossible, is far more expensive than solar panels. Solar panels are 4x more efficient in space. 2x because of lack of a

First time talking to humans? We distinguish murder from killing because the latter is sometimes justified (e.g., in war or self-defense). We justify everything we do.

My wife stopped eating octopus after seeing the giant Pacific octopus in the Monterey aquarium. The way it stares at you hints at a real intelligence. Maybe the smaller species aren't that smart, but why take the chance?

Are you saying that if space datacenters fail then SpaceX stock will go up ? Then it sounds like you should invest a lot of money in them. ETA: If you had invested $1,000 in 2016 when Tesla Roof was announced, you'd have $25,000 today

Anger is useless in this situation. Even if you can identify someone to blame (sama? Elon Musk?) what's your anger going to do to them? How is that going to help you? Feeling angry is drinking poison to hurt the other guy. Uncertainty

I meant that weird is different, and different is unaligned. If I have a team and each team member is pushing in a different direction, then we're going to get outcompeted by an aligned team. Of course, often weird/different is ho

No. Cooling is probably the easiest problem to solve, easier than power. And in both cases, the problem is solved by mass to orbit. All you need for cooling is a big f-ing radiator. Solar panels are chips, and not trivial to manufacture. Bu

Yours is the only valid argument. If space datacenters are not competitive with terrestrial (in terms of megatokens/$ or whatever), then they will never work and SpaceX will fail. That's the whole ball game. But anyone who thinks

"Who knows" is the right answer, I think. If (a) demand for AI continues to increase, and (b) SpaceX can get to ~$100/kg to orbit, then they will have a ridiculously deep moat. Probably more like 10 years, though. But as you

It's not about being weird--it's about change vs. stasis. The problem with weird is that not everyone can be weird, almost by definition. Moreover, people get things done collectively, and for that to work, the group (at whatever

As near as I can tell, their logic is basically: 1. Imagine AI replaces all jobs. 2. Since AI is controlled by a very small number of people, they will be the ones that get all the money, since they are doing all the work. 3. Since there ar
