In the introduction of the space-x launch broadcast, they mention that in real aborts, military will be involved. With helicopters, rescue personnel will be dropped of. Also there, it still takes a while for boats to arrive.

There's a controlled way of doing that. Prototype in python, as soon as it's clear what/how things need to be done, implement in C++, add python bindings for manual testing, unit-tests to solidify things. The bindings will en

The C++ language cannot be parsed with a context-free parser. A large part of the build times, however, is due to optimizations. In the early days, clang was much faster in compilation than gcc. Over the years, it has improved on optimizati

For computational tasks, I've seen SMT give a roughly 50% performance increase compared to not using SMT on the same machine. Much of that depends on how 'regular' the executions are. A highly optimized FFT or BLAS routine wi

It seems they replaced the c code by optimized assembly, and improving the existing assembly that was there. I think loop-unrolling is one of the things they did, but am not sure: https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git

It's partly a historical reason as well. There are many projects with very complex Makefiles. Those are hard to integrate into your own project. Header-only is the other extreme: No makefile at all. With package managers like Conan and

France is one. Speed on a long stretch between boots, go to the gas station. Average speed is ok, still quicker at the destination. Can't particularly recommend it, but it does happen. Pro-tip: bring enough cash to pay the fine, becaus

Although I agree with your point, cmake+vcpkg goes a long way for hobby projects, cmake with a bit of custom scripting goes a long way for larger scale projects. The cmake language might not be beautiful, but it does allow for simple sub-pr

For big (legacy) code-bases, just upgrading the compiler is a project by itself. All 3rd party C++ libs need to be upgraded, all internal projects need to upgrade in an orderly fashion. On top of that, just the change of the compiler will e

Although the authors list is quite comprehensive, there is a (very slow) convergence to a few systems. The professional world seems to settle on CMake. In open source, meson is quite popular. The C++ world is still way better than the hardw

After reading, I do wonder, though: If one would work out the 'packet' datatype of the Eigen ( http://eigen.tuxfamily.org/index.php?title=Main_Page ) library, wouldn't that give the same kind of parallelism? To

Note that https://clang-analyzer.llvm.org/scan-build.html is another llvm-based static analyzer. It does a more deep analysis into the control flow, whereas clang-tidy does (mostly?) comparatively simpler checks on the AST.

Training a neural net with analog circuitry would mean an extra challenge in the reproducibility of results. That's currently already a challenge, tiny changes have large differences in performance of the network.

Strip the company into pieces and sell those is another option, that's what KKR did with NXP. NXP is now again healthy, but that's thanks to a CFO who pulled all sorts of tricks to reduce the huge debt that KKR put on NXP.
