I am flying this Friday so I will make sure to test it out. That's a pretty steep price for the iPhone app though... if you guys can recommend me alternative routes then that would be worth paying for, but at the current stage I don't see

Good question. May be they could get sued for gender discrimination? Although I'd like to see two things before making any assumptions: 1. Do men really out number women drastically on dating sites (this is only assumed, but is it really

Depends on how you want to be perceived. One of the most interesting article I read talked about how this founder carries 2 business cards. When he meets prospective clients, his title on the card says "VP of Sales" so his organization se

Agreed, but I am not sure why. A couple of years ago, I would read almost every article / discussion posted on the front page of HN. But now days, I click through at most 10-20% of the content. Dunno if it's a shift in culture, or just th

From what I have read, I think the PayPal and X.com merger did more harm than good. There were a ton of ego clashes, technology preference differences (unix vs. .net), etc. But merging with the right team will certainly help, and I am sure

"Starbucks needs to do some corporate soul searching. Take a look at American Express. It doesn't sell credit, it sells membership. Coca-Cola doesn't sell soft drinks, it sells refreshment. Starbucks, what do you sell … besides coffee? What

Startup.com was a well-filmed documentary: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256408/ I saw it before I embark on the startup lifestyle, and the story rings true on many levels.

Revenue is much harder to get than profit. As an ex-consultant, you can always cut cost to achieve better profit margin. Revenue is a different story. You are right that valuation is on a bet that Facebook's revenue will continue to grow.

I think the argument is flawed to begin with... $/user is just a bad comparison. I am no investment banker but I'd think valuations are calculated via a combination of revenue + growth. If we look at Facebook's estimated 2009 revenue, whic

So, basically it's hard to make a quick buck? But looking at history, while media-centric companies take a longer time to mature, don't they also typically have much bigger exit? Also, what's your take on user-generated media vs. editorial?
