Transcoding is still expensive for video, but not for audio. There's certainly some cost to transcoding all the world's MP3s, but given that a single modern CPU can encode and decode audio at 100-500x realtime, it's fairly small.

I tried this in Audacity, with the project set to 96kHz and two tones at 25kHz and 28kHz. I couldn't hear either of the tones individually, but I could hear a tone when played together. This is on Windows 7 with the sound card configured

What's that, a terrible implementation of an average idea? The versions of Open Firmware in the wild are notoriously buggy, often to the point that they are barely capable of more than booting the original OS designed for the machine.
