Yes, I had that example in mind. Another example, I might be wrong here though, is the ooold disk handling code in BSD, where you had to specify cylinders, heads and other things, and the OS tried to optimize performance based on closeness.

Not fundamentally changed, but some things have become more expensive so old assumptions and optimisations should be re-evalued, it's just sound engineering really.

Are you from Finland perhaps? I did read somewhere that they considered making 40km/h the default speed in all Finnish cities.

I wonder what work/research would satisfy his need for "the next thing" / "the right way"? Maybe working with Alan Kay and the Viewpoint Institute? Or would he perhaps consider what they are trying to accomplis

Rust's package system, Cargo, uses it. See http://doc.crates.io/guide.html for an example.

I hope there's something along the lines of sub-space transmissions. Once we discover it, we'll start listening and discover a plethora of civilisations out there. Would also be nice if they periodically transmitted decoding instr

Not sure about inlining, but if you put #![some_attribute(args)] at the top of a .rs file, it applies to the whole file.

I'm trying to write a tiny lisp interpreter in Rust myself. I haven't got very far. Do you have a public repository for a curious fellow hacker?

I've seen that movie 4-5 times. I like it, it's very cheesy. Every time I watch it, I become more and more convinced Dr Forbin planned it all. :) Did you know the movie is based on a series of books?

FreeBSD has many labels for how it uses memory. Active, Inactive, Cache etc, to specify the purpose. See this question and answer: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/134862/what-do-the-d...

Oh come on! This is the second comment in this thread that seem to claim Linux is so special and glorious. FreeBSD definitely does this, maybe even 3BSD or 4BSD did this. Functionality like this is basic OS design knowledge.

I can recommend f.lux. With it the whole environment becomes of about the same light. Without it, and with a dark theme in your code editor you have one level of light, and when you switch to a web browser you can bombarded by photons. :-&#

I agree. I read that comment last night and could almost not sleep due to the insights it gave me. I'm going to spend the whole weekend re-reading about Functors, Applicative and Monads now. Maybe this time I'll grok it all. Thank

As I see it, the inside of Web Components still need a nice and structured way to function. I'd build my app using ReactJS now, and when I decide to use web components, I can transform each separate ReactJS component into a web compone
