We use HipChat at work, and I use Slack for some other projects; both pale in comparison to the simplicity, flexibility and client-options of IRC. But for those less technical it's a fantastic and easy to setup alternative. Pointless i

Thanks for the links, really interesting reads and some great programming concepts. Although I'm not a fan of curly brackets and semicolons, it's the `var` keyword which annoys me the most!

Fantastic idea. Shame the language had to take so many cues from JavaScript!

Couldn't agree more, perhaps a tiny bit of PHP to handle headers/footers but certainly nothing more. It seems these days you need a whole Django/Wordpress/etc app for even the simplest, static content.

Quickly scanned through - pretty sure jinja is a templating engine, not a static site generator...

Obviously completely biased. Well utilised hardware or dedicated servers can easily compete (and blow out of the water at cheaper DC's) on price with AWS (and then you actually get guaranteed resources).

The site is pretty light on details; I'd want to know more how it works before moving from kSplice...

There's a fine balance here; speed isn't necessarily a problem, but speeding in the wrong places/at the wrong times. It's all about driving to the given conditions, which sadly many people do not do.

I suspect this is because it looks bad to display the individual status of every node, because they'll have more common failures; keeping it limited to DC-wide issues is good for business. They should have a private/client-only pe

I love these "skip ahead w/ referrals" systems, because they're so incredibly easy to cheat - sorry about that! Am very much looking forward to checking the app out.

What the countries allied against Russia's moves into crimea don't seem to realise is that Russia literally doesn't give a shit: Lavrov added that Russia was "not attached to this format and we don't see a great mi

I love this idea, and welcome any attempts to improve the quality of comments on HN (despite already being one of the more sensible discussion sites). My problem is with the not being able to post more comments while one is pending. I'

I'm glad to see this on the HN homepage, it's about time americans started questioning why their insurance/healthcare system is focussed on money and not health.

Perhaps the safest (certainly not right) thing to do is call 911 and get the fuck out of there rather than trying to help and being imprisoned/abused for it.

Thanks for the link, really interesting/enlightening read. I would hope, at least, that Europe's police officers are on the whole less pointlessly violent (though, as Peretz points out the majority of SF police probably don't

“I mean, there are a lot of young cops on the street, trying to make a name for themselves.” - oh, so it's OK then. Absolutely disgusted by this story, particularly after reading another story about a different fucked up justice system

So another exchange which ignored the known 'bug' in bitcoin and which as a result made them open to exploitation. Why can't bitstamp just admit they have a software issue and are fixing it?

jQuery still has it's uses... like when it's essential to have consistent support across browsers old & new. However I much prefer to tell users who insist on using out-of-date/poorly-built browsers to upgrade or fuck off
