Remember this is the speed (in theory) that you get from Netflix on that ISP. Netflix is not measuring your total ISP bandwidth. They can only measure how much bandwidth the ISP provides you for Netflix.

When choosing a language, the community is (almost) everything. If the community is divided and unwilling to support v3, that is more than enough reason to "penalize" them and not use the language.

Really. You're trying to compare Gitmo to North Korean prison camps? Certainly, Gitmo is no picnic, but I have to question if you actually RTFA.

Agreed. After years of haranguing Nvidia, for example, it wasn't until Valve started pushing linux gaming that Nvidia FINALLY started clearing the air a bit on their atrocious driver support. Valve has a lot of influence in PC gaming.

Tell that to the NSA. They just Cease&Desist'd on intellectual property grounds someone who made a satirical t-shirt using their logo.

So the government can C&D anyone who uses their proprietary business information (like UPS or Fedex) without paying royalties? Sounds great! Another victory for the proletariat! :C

My favorite is when I try to take my laptop to a meeting so I can, you know, actually get some work done. And then, I'm lucky to get 5 minutes of useful work done for each hour of meeting.

It becomes problematic when these companies get control over the content of a brand search. There are ramifications for consumer advocacy. What happens when I start searching for "apple sec ruling" and I am given a full page spons

FWIW, I can build an app in html5/javascript for every major desktop and mobile platform that runs "natively" on the host OS.

Your argument applies even more to something like Breaking Bad or even the venerable Babylon 5. The strength of those offerings was the build-up over many seasons. Ugh, and please let's not judge Star Trek TNG on its first season. Yike

I'm usually the first to rail against NSA shenanigans but I also believe you shouldn't ascribe to malice what can more easily be explained by stupidity.

It's common when writing a scientific paper to write opinions like that. "We showed there is no correlation. Possible explanations for past correlation may be..." It's not just some guy throwing theories against a wall t

Aren't some of these arguments against Gladwell along the same lines as people complaining about Mythbusters' lack of rigor? Well, then I defer to zombie Feynman. http://xkcd.com/397/ I'm not saying Glad

It's fairly obvious that the author knows next to nothing about military research, or even how much engineering goes into modern industry, defense or otherwise. A lot more goes on than just "researching things that kill people.&qu

Then there's Facebook. "We integrated with Facebook a few months ago, it should be easy to do it again." Famous last words. I've lost count of how many times I've become an "expert" at some aspect of Faceb

And that's the core of the issue for me. I don't have any problem with the NSA working with and studying encryption and methods to break encryption. What I have a problem with is invading my privacy and gathering my communications

I pretty much agree with you, but I think the point is that focusing on technical education and incentivizing that learning (like the WPA2 key hidden in a 10,000 line text file) can help build critical thinking skills. If instead of putting
