For modern performances Stefan Jackiw soloing for Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy is my favorite piece of music. And you can fortunately watch it on YouTube. I’ve listened to a number of recordings and no others compare, not even Heifetz’s. I’

One of David Foster Wallace’s many prescient musings. It’s a snippet from Infinite Jest, for those curious. Truly a fantastic novel. Clearly I’ve read his books too often though, because even without the telltale reference to interlace I wo

I am 100% unsure, but if you hold a modern Sonicare toothbrush head up to a refrigerator door the magnetism (if any) is not even strong enough to hold the head to the door. The old models had two dark-black rectangular magnets (many of whic

You reminded me of an old trick (now expired) that my grandma taught me: take the magnet out of used Sonicare toothbrush heads, wrap the magnet in electrical tape creating a pull-tab, and you have a rather powerful refrigerator magnet! Soni

Interesting close-to-the-end note related to much of the medical research (on mice) that gets posted to HN: “The end result, in retrospect, was predictable: they successfully cured muscular dystrophy in mice, but not in humans.”

This. It was (near the) front page news of most local newspapers that all get their news from the same Reuters-like sources/each other - stories like this are always popular water-cooler topics and spread rapidly as easy smalltalk.

What takes a decade to overcome? That seems like a gross exaggeration - from reading the Texas penal code it looks like your first DWI conviction is a class A misdemeanor and the license suspension period is 90 days to a year… that’s rather

Basically ‘N-word-________’ was used to describe anything that was a shade of black well into the mid 90s. ‘N-word paper’ was used to refer to the tar paper that goes on roofs; ‘n-word toes’ was used to describe a darker toned edible nut. P

These two had a bit of additional history - 11 years of friendship and they both suffered similar (the same?) injuries that they helped each other through. They were close enough that one was invited to the other’s wedding. It seems like if

Part of me is baffled by the (based-on-my-experience) tremendous overlap of people who purport to be environmental conscious yet also buy loads of vinyl. As noted by The Guardian digital media is not much better though. https://w

Is there any evidence that this type of -entirely inhumane- testing has ever yielded results that a person could argue justifies the cruelty? I feel like all I ever hear is that rat/mice testing is effectively inapplicable to humans… I

I just remember telling teachers to not be in such a tizzy when I was quite young, certainly before middle school. Generally their state was my fault; I was far from a model student.

I’m USA born, have lived here my entire life, and have known what “being in a tizzy” meant since… 4th or 5th grade? I thought it was a relatively common word/phrase. I do read books though, but nothing fancy. Our literacy standards are

Bozeman would be an odd place for avoiding plebs - 30+% of the population is partying college kids and ski bums/outdoor vagrants. There are also the multi-million dollar homes, of course. It really is lovely there though.
