Yet, most IT work is on-site. At least in EU.

Does any of this require a supercomputer? How has the computing paradigm fundamentally change in 30 years?

I had some of the first SLC SSDs. It didn't help at all. Windows 7 was a massive improvement though.

On rare occasions that I have to boot Windows to run some government-compatible software on a 32-core, 64GB RAM and I-don't-even-care-to-check-how-fast SSD, I have to listen to it firing on all cilinders while Defender fights Malicious

A full-blown OS with an office suite fit on something like 100MB drive with everything opening and responding to user input in a snappy manner. And it didn't show random ads or try to track your every action. You could chose when and i

Andrew Tanenbaum is in a no way Dutch. States as much in his Wikipedia article. There are plenty of Dutch scientists, including in CS, so no need to gekoloniseren another one.

I left my previous job about a year ago due to extreme burnout. Took some time to recover, started looking for the next thing a few months back and so far it's pretty bleak. I'm in EU and most jobs are on-site in expensive cities.

That was just my anecdotal point that a Pi can handle typical home internet speeds over Wireguard without overtaxing the CPU. IMHO, Wireguard's setup is pretty trivial as is, especially moving to it after years (decades at this point)

I'm not sure what's the max throughput is, but I just tested 50 Mbit down/80 Mbit up passthrough from a cafe Wi-Fi to my 3B with Wireguard (using wg-quick) at home. Seems enough for anything I'd use it for.

I don't use Windows, but can you fully uninstall Defender (or whatever it's called) in Windows 10/11, never have malicious software something scanner or updates run automatically?

Thanks for the hint. From the paper it seems it's highly implementation-dependent which drives can be compromised and there's no immediate way to tell. Still it seems OPAL 2.0 is good enough to deter data leaks in case of theft (e

Does this affect OPAL 2.0 in any way? I tried to search through the spec [1] but didn't find immediate clues. [1]: https://trustedcomputinggroup.org/wp-content/uploads/TCG_Sto...

Where do you draw the line between heavy editing and fully AI-generated? Some edits have little in common with the source, so at which point is the source not relevant anymore? What if you feed an original photo through some AI-enhanced too
