You might want to check out MNT Research if you haven’t yet. They make repairable laptops, too, but they also release their work as free software and open hardware. https://mnt.re/

I think that’s a stretch. They may have hoped for the Fediverse to be used a certain way and/or by a certain kind of people, but the network itself and the design thereof don’t really reflect, support or enforce this in any way. (I a

Are we talking about the kind of syrup that’s essentially just a solution of sugar, or the kind of syrup with other flavourful ingredients? I was mostly concerned with the sugar, since it’s detrimental to our health (and following your argu

My recent experience with social media has been very different. These days I'm mostly active on the Fediverse, and in contrast to the News, my timeline doesn’t feel like a model of the world at all. All I see are little snippets. Many

How do more sugar and syrup constitute a better deal? Shouldn’t the better formula result in a good-tasting drink using less sugar and syrup, i.e. what Austria seems to have?

I’m not sure if you're being ironic or not, since ‘regional taste preferences’ is a somewhat famous excuse brands frequently use to justify selling inferior-quality products (think less meat, less nuts, less fruit, more unhealthy fille

‘Pushover’ is another term for ‘permissive’. It emphasises the fact that, unlike copyleft licences, pushover licences don’t make an attempt to protect the freedoms they grant their users. In other words, they allow anyone to make and distri

I’m more hopeful about Servo because it’s released under a copyleft licence, whereas Ladybird chose a pushover one.

TeXmacs is pretty great. I feel like its internals still feel a bit arcane, though. Just editing documents through the graphical interface is fine, but if you happen to use some commonplace symbols or diacritics a lot, opening the file as p

I was talking about freedom, hence the capitalisation to make that even clearer. The parent only talked about ‘open source’, which has a huge overlap with Free Software, but the two still have different formal definitions (not to mention

I think it’s ultimately up to your instance whether it keeps your posts indefinitely or not. I think most do, but others might delete posts after a period of time, in which case they should mention this to their users (on their ‘About’ page

For me, it’s clearer with a double colon. Not intuitive, but extremely easy to get used to. When I see the first colon introduce a list, I have to go out of my way to not see the other colons as introducing lists.

I think you are mistaken; neither is a subset of the other. At the very least, there are licences which are recognised as open source by the OSI, but not as free by the FSF, and vice versa [1]. I think it’s more appropriate to say they are

‘Free software’ and ‘open source software’ (as respectively defined by the FSF [1] and the OSI [2], which is how they’re usually used in practice) have overlapping definitions. The project in question is released into the public domain via

I agree. For me as a beginner, C was relatively easy to learn the basics of. Sure, I never went on to get familiar with all the details and become proficient in it, but the basic concepts really aren’t that hard to understand. There’s just

Is that really the case? I’m not outright disputing this, but with the term ‘copyleft’ originating from the free software movement and all, I normally take it to identify free software which protects the freedoms it grants (typically by ext

I think it’s most likely a combination of both: Freedom 0 was later added in the first place, and newly numbering the first place with 0 could likely only have been thought of by a programmer.

If I recall correctly, there were originally three freedoms, but then a fourth one was thought of and put at the front to give it prominence, numbering it as zero as not to disturb the original numbering.

That is not the spirit of open source, but rather the spirit of free software. The spirit of open source is to effectively have freedom without talking about it.

Whether MIT-type licences give more freedom than copyleft is very disputable, since they make it extremely easy to lose. But you are right that terms like ‘free’ or ‘libre’ are in no way restricted to copyleft.

I enjoy using GIMP. Most of my (not very advanced) needs are met quite well. Looking forward to try out the more recent versions too.
