You're assuming that the intelligence of a consumer of well designed products is at parity with that of a consumer of cheap products. You're also assuming that the critical mass of people have enough money to choose.

Does it make it better to say "political"? I'm fairly sure that is the implication. For anyone considering donating, read this first: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33611094

For anyone interested, read on the Peripatetic School, and the practice of walking and talking. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripatetic_school I have always loved the idea of a College course being taught while stro

No, thank you. But there are many awesome ones. And many that have been active since I joined... in 1996. When I left high school, I made friends on IRC. Many are my closest friends to this day.

Fair enough - I hadn't considered that the implication was it would take a conspiracy to do it.

Thank you for asking - I understand this is wishy-washy. Here's my reasoning: 1. 'The mind' and 'the body' have a 'relationship'. 2. 'The mind' is affected by the information age. [e.g.: 1] 3. Th

Honest question: does anyone else open notepad and start typing when they want to make a new webpage? I have been making website and pages since 1998, and have never done it another way.

Why is this getting downvoted? Can someone who is downvoting, or anyone, provide a reason? Is the comment patently incorrect?

And then there are those of us who positively REVILE the mobile interface. I will continue to use a non-laptop desktop computer until I have no choice. For me, I turn my telephone on for 2FA challenges, and then turn it off again. I hate th

The relationship between body and mind has shifted dramatically since ~2000. Does anyone know of solid research that analyzes a connection between that very big change, and anomalous physical changes like this?

I know I'm missing something here, but I still see the option to sort by upload date. This shows me the most recently posted results. There are other granular options for upload date, like last hour, today, etc. I'm about as far a

Fair enough. I'm an American born American who relishes language studies. I prefer British English in most cases. In this case, to me, using [sic] reads as preposterous. I kind of like it, but it's definitely unnecessary, right?

Hear hear - we are alike. My comment was basically yours, aimed at another person who was correcting someone, with incorrect information. That said, I had parents like that too, _and_ I did a comp-lit degree, so I'm basically hopeless.

Libera chat is rad, though channels are a mixed bag on IRC servers. I've met awesome people with whom I've been in IRC channels now for... phew... 25 years, on Undernet of all places. I find it hasn't changed all that much ov

Exactly. People should use IRC as a tool for communications that don't really need encryption. If you are someone's high-value target, don't use IRC.

Man, I wish you would come back to IRC. Who else started using it in 1996, and never stopped? Lots! Who else never touched any of the social media sites. Lots! Discord is a frustrating UI experience for me on all levels, so I just can'

I think there is value in the conversation, even without a solution. It's enough of a solution to me to understand which plastic is worth my time to recycle, and which is not. As it is, I recycle all of it. It seems this is a waste of

They calculate that it is 1600 light years away. So, unless you were lighting your childhood campfires 1600 years ago, that light still has a little way to go.

I don't think either of these are ideologies, and if they were, I'm pretty sure they do not necessarily conflict. I guess it is just a numbers game, but this whole page is one of the more unintelligent threads on HN I have ever se

Isn't this just a matter of plurality? e.g.s: "There is not enough talent" "There are not enough talented developers" "There's" is not correct when used to refer to multiple things.

This is current, but it wasn't always like this. And I suspect that this varies by location. In the 80's and 90's where I lived (rural NE US), pot smokers who didn't smoke tobacco were rare and looked down on.

Were it not for this, I would go back to the landline that I enjoyed until recently. It regularly strikes me as absurd that quality was so much better on an old landline. It's an odd trade-off for which I would never have voted. Even s
