Oracle has certainly disgraced itself with this case, but as the article makes plain on the first page there is a clear legal basis for assuming that Java development is safe from Oracle's interference in almost all use cases.

You're kind of missing the point. Tao is under the impression that most "gamified" math education software is based on rewards for solving entire problems. He believes that rewarding smaller steps on the path to the solution of more compl

Pferreir, hellbanning is where your posts appear normally when rendered for your account, but do not show up for anyone else. Try viewing this thread using a freshly created HN account. Don't know why this has happened to you...

My professional field is statistical genetics. I don't actually want to bet, but if I did I'd give odds of three to one against this replicating, and ten to one against it having anything at all to do with the genetic architecture of human

Meteor mixes server- and client-side code, and in general the two sides will interact so intimately that as I understand the GPL, simply separating the server-only code into its own files won't be enough to avoid the requirement to provide

I'm curious about this too. The individual tests should be identifiable regardless of the proportions in which they were assigned.

Your comment doesn't address the "as one sees fit and without being tracked" part. Both twitter and facebook track everything, and facebook is directly and opaquely influencing discourse through its feed filters. But no one is talking abou

When those things become essential to civic discourse, the line between need and choose gets blurry. How many people choose to go without cell phones without being branded as RMS-type weirdos? And the recent thread on RMS's rejection of f

Why would it? The capacity to manipulate the national currency is a major source of government power. Plugging into bitcoin would only dilute that power.

This comes up pretty often, but it's worth noting that it's built-in scarcity. Deflation in the sense of increasing purchasing power will only happen if it is more widely adopted as a medium of exchange (which is definitely possible.) I
