The trouble with this is; would any of those companies still made it big if they had been bought out? Probably, maybe, possibly? Hard to be sure either way, indeed just as hard as when you're thinking about buying them. Speculation is never

Plenty of people survive plane accidents; in fact if you are involved in a plane accident in the US you have a greater than 90% chance of surviving. Which highlights the point; it is fear that drives your viewpoint (that car accidents are p

Yes, and that's the GPs point; that paralysing fear outweighs the logic of the situation. Indeed, I'd suggest your own comment about being able to mitigate a car accident is a prime example of our difficulty with assessing the probability o

Metropolis is a fantastic film! I've never been into silent films, but last year my brother conducted a performance of Metropolis (live orchestra of the film score) and I was blown away by how good it was!

It depresses me how negative out society can sometimes be, and lack of common courtesy is one of the biggest culprits. I was always brought up to be polite, even to people who didn't deserve it - and especially to people who you didn't know

In the UK, yes, they operate a couple of rail franchises. Personally I've always found them far and away the best company - but they have the misfortune of running "cross country" routes, which go through every bottleneck in our rail system

> No country is an island Of course, Britain literally is an island... :) Slight tangent, but it's not unsurprising that Brits, especially older Brits, might hold this view btw (that everything should be produced at home if possible).

I've recently changed my view on this. HN hasn't been "just about tech and startups" for some time - the community is simply too diverse. That's not necessarily a bad thing; I still always learn unique insights or new facts from threads one
