People are. But it doesn't address all the issues if CO2 production, like ocean acidification and will have it's own unintended consequences. Moving to carbon-free sources of energy is still the best option, and we should still be

There's a real difference between taking out a loan to buy consumables/non-revenue generating depreciating assets and corporate debt that is taken out on the expectation that there will be a higher return on them. In a sense risin

This seems like an attempt to rewrite history. I was an avowed Firefox user, but Firefox was slow. I bought a EEE PC and Firefox was just too heavy to run, whereas Chrome ran fine. Eventually all my computers ran Chrome because Firefox wasn

Gary isn't a technologist, but he wants to set the stage with critique so that when/if a fusion of the ideas does better he can claim to have been important to that, regardless of the fact that the idea is obvious, and the impleme

I had a Windows Phone, it had a lot of good things about it, but I have no desire for anyone to resurrect it. There was just not enough developer interest/market share to sustain it. I still miss having my next appointment on my lock s

It seems like Duo is working out. It has more than 500m installs, and isn't installed by default, so it's numbers aren't padded the same way Hangouts' are. Allo, despite being shut down got to about the same size as Sign

What you see as throwing shit at the wall, looks like testing market hypothesis to me. Google isn't going to win the messaging space by building a kitchen sink messaging app that is compatible with everything, so they need to look for

Why do people ever switch chat apps? Besides shutdowns, it's because the new app does something the old one doesn't. Signal's pitch was easy encrypted messaging, but now there are apps that fill that slot, even Facebook Messe

Duo has at least 10x more installs on the Play store, it's pretty clear that Duo has succeeded, while Allo has failed.

Signal and Allo actually have a similar number of installs, they're both in the 10-50m installs bucket in the Play store. I use Signal, but it's fine at best, but it's not really going to break out of it's niche.

Everyone who is old enough appreciates what Firefox did for the web. But I'm not convinced that a Chromium monoculture is the same as an IE6/Trident monoculture. Largely because Chromium is open source. Apple has successfully fork

The more "sophisticated" a textual analysis tool is, the less interpretable it is, and the more difficult it will be to get people to believe the output. And yes, I think the people involved in this will take that risk.

I think Greg Brockman from OpenAI has given talks where he argues that we may be able to get AGI by just scaling up existing algorithms. Their work on DoTA 2 is basically on this track of just scaling up well known algos.
