This is a truly optimistic assessment of the Availability of Government Services. I went to the post office a few weeks ago, and while the building was open, they had stopped taking packages. Not that they wouldn't mail them today, but

Google had all of the pieces before Alexa even existed. The Google Assistant was basically a bunch of existing Search tech duct taped together at the start. Some of this investment is negated by the amazing progress in neural nets since Goo

Does anyone have any good examples of concrete privacy harms that people have suffered? Generally, the larger an effect is, the easier it is to measure. If we don't have any ideas on how to measure it, that makes me think the effect is

What are the margins on child care? How elastic is demand for childcare? Not all child care has equally strict limits on the ratio (it depends where care is being provided), increasing wages may drive people to more loosely regulated child

I don't think this an indictment of the typical supply & demand model. The model is pretty flexible since the shape of the various curves will dramatically change what happens. The real argument isn't about the model, but rath

I'm fairly sympathetic to abolishing corporate taxes, since corporate taxes are a flat rate on all shareholders, and some of it even falls on workers, however... Corporate taxes provide an additional incentive to reinvest the profits o

At some point blaze added the concept of visibility to control dependencies, so teams can whitelist users of their code. Though you can always comment it out while developing locally.

Thanks for the answer, and the pointer to those books! I hadn't really thought about the layout challenges. Though I think the benefit would be less about just releasing the source, though the Open Data Structures book makes a compelli

So I got started working on ML in 2015 as well, and it has gotten far easier, but the thing that has gotten easier is the engineering side of things, not the ML bits. And tbh, "take the latest model and tune it on your data" has g

What's the goal of the course? A lot of the changes I've seen (from a distance) in the last few years are about how to better scale front-end development, which isn't really necessary for people who don't plan to be deve

Thank you very much for making your textbook available. Maybe having a separate set of problems for the online version, with solutions, would be appropriate? I have been wondering this for all freely available textbooks: have you ever thoug

One of the things I don't really see mentioned about scooters is they're less ideal in cold/wet weather. So I'm not sure if the east coast can really capture the benefits as well as California.

I think you made the same.mistake as the media - thinking that today's AI systems are more general than they truly are. IBM did build a computer that could play jeapordy. But being able to play jeapordy doesn't tell us how good an

Hence my point that the issue is not DRM. Even DRM that locks content to your account, e.g. iTunes did not result in a monopoly.

I don't think your argument here really follows. DVDs have DRM, streamed content has DRM, and yet neither of those markets have monopolies. The fact that Amazon has a proprietary format has more impact on market structure than the fact

The pro-ebook comments here are surprising. I love ebooks, but they have some real drawbacks: you can't lend them, you can't switch platforms easily, their layouts are usually pretty limited, and they often screw up diagrams, etc.
