I don't think there's much of a difference. If software devs were focused on entertainment value of their output rather than some other nonsensical metric, it might be a much better thing.

You know, those of us with sense about this need to start working together and lobby the government actively to demolish patents, copyrights, and trademarks. Ideas need to be free for society to grow.

If you want to make money, offer it to people who consider your work valuable. Establish a patronage and paywall yourself. Those of us who believe in decency and social good will continue to create and distribute for free.

In other words, now you can make decent websites instead of garbage! You're right, that makes this whole thing worth it!

This is how I got Win95. In fact, if memory serves, even Win98 was available on floppy, and possibly WinME Upgrade as well. I'm pretty sure when we were forced from 9x FAT16 to NTFS + FAT32 was when they demanded CD-ROM drives.

I use Balabolka to read back what I write. With ebooks, I hate to suggest Apple products, but the screen reader on the ipad is great at reading epub files out loud (not so great at PDFs though).

I suggest you consider the current situation in China. They have state-run social network. They use it to keep up their state surveillance and censorship apparatus. A government run social network is one where you can and will be indicte

Where, pray tell, is the proper place to engage with these people as fellow human beings then in your opinion? Is it loosely defined as a place that the rhetoric and world-view you prefer (and which I probably prefer as well) rules with an

It "worked" for Reddit because people moved over to Voat or back to the chans. Just because the community moves off a certain platform doesn't actually change the existence of either the people or their opinions. I want to

I think I understand what you're saying, but if it was so vile and so toxic, why would people keep returning to it and stay so involved? Whether you happen to like it or not, these are communities just as much as any other. I think it

Basically yes - then again what I'd like to see (and which I do see somewhat on Voat) is that you have fringe people on all sides - and yes, I mean all, not "both" - there's more than two sides to most human issues.

I have an alternate solution especially for Gab and Voat. Rather than allowing them to become known cesspits, advertise them to people and say, "see how others' opinions exist" - people will sign up for curiosity, they'

Well, I'll say this much about AMP and how it is: I actively avoid it; but then again, I don't use GMail, I search with DDG or Exalead most of the time, etc. I like the idea, I hate the implementation. I don't like a single

If a site does not require personal information, it does not need SSL to be "secure". Webcomics I read, blogs, etc, do not need to be "secured", as they are not requesting data. They do not need HTTPS.

Re: "HTML Lite" - I think there's already a pretty solid solution. Hand-coded HTML 3 without any CSS, ECMAScript, or other dynamic elements. That always worked pretty well for me, and pages that could load acceptably on 28.8

Like any community, that's defined by the people in it. Some groups are excellent, some groups are mostly dead, some display varying levels of toxicity. Overall my experience hasn't been a bad one.
