The UCLA study definitively showed that cannabis use isn’t associated with increased risk of cancer: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/large-study-finds... It’s hard to say exactly why, but it is reality.

Yes. There are already efforts in that direction, such as Julia Robotics (juliarobotics.org). With Julia, there is work to be done to get to small, optimized, static binaries - which it sounds like Mojo will provide out of the box, given it

I have wanted deterministic timing in Julia for years. It's come up periodically in the forums. That, and optimized static binaries, would make Julia truly general purpose. I don't mind Python syntax, I hope Mojo lives up to all t

I’ve read most responses to this, here’s my take: 1) The overall concept would be a lot clearer if it were called Earth2 instead of “Planet B”. I agree it’s unlikely we’ll find something suitable “nearby” without terraforming. 2) We know th

Solar and wind have many issues. Intermittency, the need for rare earths, and low energy density leading to ecological impact are some. It’s also under-recognized that as those technologies are built out beyond a few percent of global power

The best way forward is to reject parts of the consensus Green approach. In particular, investment in nuclear, and a plan to augment wind+solar expansion with a large nuclear (and later fusion) buildout is the way to go. The rationale for t

Given that the existence of the lab is public knowledge, the paper could have at least acknowledged that the market was also a perfect site to distribute the virus intentionally. This paper proves nothing beyond that there was a spatial rel

Interesting stuff! I hadn’t run across Carp before, so thanks for that too. I thought “Guile Steel” was obviously partly a play on the fact that steel doesn’t rust as easily. :-)

It’s worse than that. Storage can, at best, provide for some interval of backup while wind/solar aren’t providing enough power. The problem is that “100 year”, “1,000 year” or worse events will require more than currently stored. Then,

The problem with a cost comparison is that currently renewables account for less than ten percent of global energy generation. What do you think will happen to the cost there as available resources dwindle, and demand for equipment increase

You’re talking about fuel cells, which are only used with the smallest (prop) design. The two larger jets are intended to have hydrogen turbines, burning hydrogen and producing water. I love the idea of small modular reactors (SMRs) being u

This is total misinformation, sorry. Julia may, depending on your setup, be slow to initially load, but the compiler is quite fast generally. Also, there's a solution to precompile binaries with no JIT penalty... https://git

The F-35 is a combined development and low rate production program. Whether that was wise is a discussion, but it’s unsurprising that the current plane isn’t perfect. It is a LOT more perfect than the first versions though! That accounts fo

Thank you, I was going to make the same point. Another point worth considering is that if the biology of the aliens were Earthlike, it would be nice to have the "native" intensity of sunlight (or close to it) available everywhere

Most of what you wrote is wrong. There are three versions, the F-35A, F-35B and F-35C for the AF, Marines and Navy respectively. The three split a long time ago, so no version is holding any other back. Where things aren't so good is t

The thing is on a MBP I can run a Linux VM, which is good enough for almost everything. The reverse is not true. There is a ton of good software for macOS that isn't available on Linux.

It seems an implementation using the pypy runtime might be a better idea. All that said, with Vulkan here and parallelism in general being the way of the future, Python with its GIL limitation seems an odd choice.

The main change I'd like at this point would be to transition from an "employee" job to a "founder" job. That is in the works, we'll see how the next 6-12 months go... :-)
