Railscasts definitely helped me Become a better engineer, and I remember eagerly waiting for each new episode. Thank you Ryan for all your hard work!

Best comment I’ve read in a while. The last sentence was the cherry on the cake. I had a good time reading it, thanks!

Well a die design, just like code, is definitely some form of intellectual property and covered by copyright law. So I think a more fair comparison would be a photo of an entire book.

Dumb question: is it legal to share a die shot like this one? What does copyright law say about this? I mean, yes, the author took the photo himself but what about the underlying material? Can I share a photo of an entire book? Do I own the

You’re missing the point. It’s not an ego problem: if you put your code on the internet with a license you should expect people to respect the license’s rules…

I would say they’re ok now. But that being said, I feel like we’re putting too much emphasis on the ease of integration anyway. Sure, it’s your first interaction with a payment gateway. But it’s also something you really only do once... I b

I rarely see Adyen mentioned in those HN threads. They might not be as big as PayPal or Stripe but in my experience they are really good.

You’re of course not the only one. That being said, it’s probably not that big of a deal for most people: there are countless other open source kernels, but Linux is by far the most popular, including in number of contributors.

Out of curiosity, would you mind linking to a few brand/models of what you would consider a proper winter coat? I have mostly lived in milder climates and would be interested in knowing what kind of gear can keep you warm by -30C

So they spent over a year of revenue on a local marketing stint. That’s pretty far past the reasonable line to me. Now maybe it was a good bullish move, but the article’s point is that so far this has never been the case for every other c

You personally don’t need Docker. Another example where it’s pretty much useless is if you can compile your code as a static binary. Now if you use a wide variety of programs written in a wide variety of languages (e.g. a C database server

I read this as a way to remind successful entrepreneurs that luck was a significant factor of their success. It would be interesting to know what fraction of them genuinely believe it’s the case.

“One codebase, KHTML, split into WebKit and Blink”. That’s inaccurate. Blink is a fork of WebKit that was itself a fork of KHTML. And actually KHTML was really a super tiny project before WebKit.

The current owner doesn’t want to sell because he doesn’t want to part ways with his current email address. Couldn’t they simply add a provision for this in a deal? Like “we’ll own the domain but we will maintain a redirection for your prev

I agree with you. I think they were willing to pay more than initially agreed to expedite the process. Since it didn’t work I’m pretty sure they’ll ask the court to execute the sale at $50k.

I’m sorry but I don’t agree. If you don’t want to sell, they say “this domain is not for sale”. If you say the price is a “firm $50k”, well, it looks to me like you’re willing to sell for $50k. And I don’t think he was bullied into coming

I’m not sure I agree with that. I think he’s absolutely free to come up with whatever ask he wants in the first place. But once he did ($50k) and once a buyer agreed to it, I’m not sure it’s fair to revisit the price. Order is of the essenc

I feel like a key difference here is that the owner was initially willing to sell for $50k. He was the one coming up with this price tag in the first place, wasn’t he?

I will have to disagree with most comments here: I’m not sure Jump is to blame here. - $100’000 seems like a rather generous compensation to change your email address. - And most importantly, they simply agreed to his initial demand. And no
