People forget that this is possible, but it's well worth mentioning. I once got someone to release some old game assets under a real license via email (and I'm still telling the story!)

I was comparing queues to HTTP endpoints for sending messages, I can't speak others besides Kafka and Redis. Redis is an order of magnitude easier to work with but struggles under loads that Kafka has no problem with. Also every once i

I am not aware of any other way to wake up a MacBook with the clamshell closed. Step 1: plug it in. If it doesn't turn on step 2 is to hit keys, right?

First responder who needs to deal with deer probably has a pair of earmuffs, might not have enough pairs for everyone standing around looking at the deer.

All very good points. What I like about Kafka is that you can queue up a bunch of messages without needing to be able to handle that load immediately. It lets you build very resistant patterns: if your message-senders overwhelm your message

What you can do is have a really large number of partitions and scale consumers up only when needed (workers need not be 1:1 with partitions.)

It's nice when you have a bunch of discrete events that you want any number of clients to work on without interfering with each other. Think of it as a fire-and-forget pub-sub. You can always have a worker dumping the queue into a data

This morning I plugged in my macbook and tried to turn it on. No dice. Hammered the external mouse and keyboard. No luck. Opened up the clamshell, started testing USB-C ports to figure out which one wants to charge today. Hammered the "

Without the "only we can make it" factor, studios with the budget to market them would be less compelled to make and market them. Sure, anyone could make another Spiderman movie, but at least I wouldn't have to hear about it.

If IP expired quickly like patents we wouldn't be subjected to so many franchise films and that would be a huge win.

There are other reasons for the dearth of mods nowdays. The PC is no longer such a dominant platform so many people who might be persuaded to try modding are playing on a device unsuited to it like a game console or phone, a pure consumptio

I feel your pain, but can't help blaming Apple rather than Homebrew. They made an OS that users can't bear to upgrade because of removed features, homebrew is merely following their lead and focusing on bleeding edge users. Maybe

If you're using well known loops, people will notice. I hear GarageBand's old loops sometimes to this day! Man, I really have to get around to extracting the ones from 1.0...

Almost everything else I do in an application, so the most I interact with the OS is when I clumsily look around for a file. I've started using fzf (you can install it with brew) and open but I shouldn't have to. QOL would be on p

If secondary market teslas start bursting into flames it's going to hurt Tesla's reputation even if they swear up and down that it was an unlicensed shop every time. So they'd better start sharing repair manuals.
