Why does Cory Doctorow hate us so much, and why do we let him get away with this? We invite him to be the speaker at prestigious conferences, give him the keynote slot, just so we can all hear him lecture us on the evils of the companies we

Man, you should read the original thread where memcopy was brought up as another example why netcat is a bad baseline for a network protocol and I was like, yea no that part at least sort of makes sense because that is the baseline. Sometim

I know of a DSP Engineer that used memcpy as a baseline to compare the speed of a sound filter. I think it is a good measure for first principle thinking. There are other things wrong with the talk, it takes way too long to get to the point

I would go even further and say that REST is BS Most people understand REST as a format for URLs and a particular semantics for HTTP methods. While it can be perfectly ok to design an api like person?id=123. This is the way that Postgrest d

Most CEO have stock options so in theory they have skin in the game. This however does not make them rational or competent actors. Maybe skin in the game isn't all that it is being made out to be, it is probably necessary but not suffi

I don't think I'd enjoy writing COBOL but array programming is actually fun to do. The experience is very refreshing compared to the verbose clean-code Software Engineering orthodoxy that seems all prevailing these days. A languag

Yes, coordination is a common theme among them. Another way of looking at it is that these systems all have a partial ordering but no full ordering, like a game of rock paper scissors. This is something that shows up all around us, space ti

Sorry don't have much time to explain, but in economics and other social sciences there are many situations where there needs to be made a tradeoff between three things, so called trilemmas. I already gave the example of voting in a de

Fascinating, I've never thought about cold blooded animals this way. From reading wikipedia there seem to be different ways in which an animal can be cold blooded.

This feels like self-pity. One can easily turn this argument on its head. What if operations people are the once that enable a bad situation to persist? As someone who prefers to create new things over maintaining old ones, I sometimes thin

This is far outside of my area of competence, but I have always had a hard time understanding/imagining what people mean when they say string theory uses extra dimensions but that those are rolled up or tiny. Like, I know about project

I've done a little bit of postgres work with the help of pgrx and I can recommend it as a platform to build data solutions. Another great resource has been the CMU channel: https://www.youtube.com/@CMUDatabaseGroup

What the author is suggesting is something very similar to hyper-dom-expressions[1] as they are used in Solid.js. I've tried using those because they look like a nice vanilla JS solution. What might not be obvious from the start is tha
