Certainly most alternative-geometry building tools could claim to be cooler than Legos. The advantage legos have is that a rectangular geometry is very intuitive and easy to work with. As alternative-geometry building toys go, I think Zome

Puzzling. Do you think people would be less irate if, instead of a violin destroyed, it had been a starving person?

I don't think he's contemplating suing Paypal, but rather the fellow who destroyed the violin. I don't know if such an act would be legally viable, but it certainly seems morally reasonable to me.

Cheap for an antique, perhaps. An everyday playing violin, especially for a student, can be had for one or two hundred dollars. Less, on eBay.

Isn't that just courtesy? I've found the topic tends to really gross guys out (much as uniquely . . . male things gross out girls), so it's best avoided in mixed company.

Gifted programs really vary. When I was in elementary school, I went to Spokane District 81's Tessera program. That program challenged me, and encouraged creative and self-directed study. I absolutely credit it with a big piece of how I t

Does he suggest software must be free? If you mean must as in, it should be illegal to do otherwise, I'm not sure. I don't think so, but given that he casts the conversation in terms of human rights, I can't entirely tell. But if you

I concur. While in most cases, some knowledge of Java or C will let you squint and read the other, when learning openGL for the first time, translating from another language makes it a lot harder. I recently tried to learn it for Android g

True in other Java spheres as well. Someone writing servlets will have almost nothing in common, knowledge-wise, with someone writing Android apps. And then you have EJB, which is something else entirely. It's like Java is English, and th

You mean we should be talking about rate of infection in a population, rather than their contribution to the raw infection numbers overall? Yeah. I thought it was implied that we were talking about that, though. I mean, even the casual rea

Actually, it does. Recent test results aren't useful with HIV; it can remain undetectable for months . It's a question of perspective. You might be certain enough of your and your partner's fidelity over the last year to bet a stranger

You know how people get really outraged -- not just morally, but legally! -- about things that might maybe possibly be discrimination? I wish they felt the same way about corruption. I wonder if someone could write a meme for that.

It's insider trading because the information that motivates it isn't public. It's like selling someone a work animal that you (but not they) know has a fatal disease. It's not literally fraud, but it smells the same. I think of the mark

I find profanity offensive in general. It's not words themselves that matter. It's what people mean by them. Saying "please", vacuous as it might be, communicates consideration. Profanity communicates the opposite. Of course, it isn't th
