I find it odd to place the priority on having people in the car rather than people at the destination . Wouldn't you rather socialize with people of your choice at your party/book club/sewing group/whatever than with the weird and awkwa

it's a product where you need a salesman. I found the articles at http://www.us-mattress.com to be helpful enough that I could make an informed decision.

That's pretty cynical. High-end mattresses are generally intended to last decades--and whether they need to be rotated depends on the material. The mattress I own now is non-flippable, and came with a 20 year warranty.

The etymology of OK is far from settled -- just check the Wikipedia page! I remember an etymology book of mine describing the puzzle as the holy grail. It's not even agreed that it was originally an acronym. And regardless of where it ca

The preference probably depends a lot on your background. If you're spending a lot of time stitching together APIs, you probably prefer longer names for clarity. If you spend a lot of time writing math, the opposite is true: shorter variab

That seems excessively skeptical to me. You don't know what an animal is feeling, in the sense that you don't know other minds exist, but I think when animal behavior makes emotional sense, it's appropriate to interpret it that way. No

What I'm really getting at, though, is that I think playing cat and mouse with professional hackers is a losing game. You shouldn't spend a few seconds trying to come up with something that they won't think of when it's their entire vocati

My understanding is that when people build password-cracking dictionaries, they include common permutations in the script. That is, for the dictionary word "dolphin", the script puts in "Dolphin" and "d0lph1n" and so forth. I'd be very su

Not that unexpected, though. Pilots in general, and particularly fighter pilots, usually have a technical background on par with a four year degree in science or engineering. Often more. Astronauts, even more so.

Actually, it's time-related and everyone sees it. Deeper comment threads have a timer that prevents comments for several minutes. It's to give people arguing with each other time to cool off.

I once had the opportunity to ask a fighter pilot what flying such an advanced jet in a tactical situation was like. He said, "Like doing calculus while lifting weights." No wonder getting that sort of job is hard!

I think that's more academically interesting than it is practically useful. Some of the foods I eat may have calorie counts that are off by 20 or 30 percent? That's noise. Being on an 1100 diet that you think is 1400 (or vice versa) d

Indeed. Chemicals are the implementation. That doesn't mean they are the essence. In fact, I think the design of a thing is closer to its essence than the implementation. Moonlight Sonata is neither just bits, nor just vinyl, nor just
