I’m sorry but you can rationalize literally almost anything using that argument. I’m quite sure the babies will get made just fine without alcohol.

I always wonder about that. I remember very specifically learning 40(?) years ago that the expansion was slowing, supposedly proven by some sort of red shift in light. That is now out of favor, but a few more new facts just might swing thi

That is interesting. So if cows are slaughtered at 15 months instead of three years, methane per cow life time has been cut by more than half. So we could have twice as many cows with the same methane output, right? Something doesn’t se

How does that work if your social graph doesn’t move with you? This reminds me of the 90’s when we had so many messenger apps - you needed different apps to talk to different people. Data portability doesn’t help that. I suppose Zuck is

The bills for what though? A car, iphone, internet, Netflix, attending movies? 100+ years ago people were happy without that. The reason we wouldn’t be today is our relatively poor way of life without them compared to those who have. I

The Economist had an article about 6 weeks ago that reached the opposite conclusion. It essentially found a comfortable middle class lifestyle was going to be hard to achieve without higher education now, compared with previous generations

It took me years to convince my kids that studying with (vocal) music was not a good idea. After a particularly bad semester at college my daughter got desperate and decided to study without music. Her grades shot way up and now she’s a b

If the energy to do the reverse is not from carbon fuels (solar, wind) then it gets interesting though, right?

Arter reading your comment I was envisioning a world that emitted no carbon. It made me wonder if the pendulum could possibly swing so far in the other direction that plants could start suffocating. Certainly not something we need to worr

The inflation would render the money we gave everyone nearly worthless, by approximately the amount given out. It’s similar to adding six zeros to every bank account.

Having only participated in a single cul-de-sac party, I can’t imagine why anyone would be against these. This sounds exactly like something that should be encouraged to create community in our increasingly insular lives.

Yes, the environment definitely makes it easier and more feasible. Still, what if we have Star Trek-like transporter building blocks today but just can’t see it yet?

What always amazes me is this could have been done back in the day if someone had had the vision and belief that it was possible. Understandable that they didn’t because it’s so far beyond the then current level of expectation. So that mak

I think maybe you’re comparing “open society” to utopia. There will always be bad actors that have to be accounted for and handled in some way. What is bad and how bad is always up for debate, but their existence will always be with us.
