Looks like an excellent plan. The JVM is awesome and having smalltalk code in plain text files instead of opaque image files might make it worth to take another look at smalltalk.

This is WAN optimization, right? This is already being done but usually for (VPN) connections to other branches of a company.

There are no absolute truths in coding, so don't pretend there are. These are classic rules of thumb that are good to read every once in a while. Take from them what you like, leave the rest alone.

Did you ever try to translate one language into another? Usually it's just generating the AST that is the hard part, then you can just spit out code and let the compiler for the target language do the hard stuff.

The main reason for this? The same people who were using the internet 10 years ago now qualify as "older adults".

Very very interesting. I had somehow not heard about OpenFlow before, which looks very promising (software + hardware based implementations), and network simulation is the easiest way to learn about all the tech. How does Mininet compare to

Read this instead: http://www.datomic.com/rationale.html It's a commercial product, so not that interesting. Using immutable data is a neat trick but something you can easily do with existing tools.

Never ever directly accuse someone of lying. Mostly because it's usually a communication problem where they said it unclear and your heard it wrong. Also because you should always give someone a way out without losing too much face. I would

It's really just market making. If the venue sells the tickets for much less than people are willing to pay it's very reasonable that people will buy them to resell them. Want to stop resale? Price the tickets closer to the real value.

Why not just commit after the first step? You can then use the normal diff, and afterwards you just remove your temporary commit to make the final one.

I do like the game :) The overall diameter of the wheel is determined by the diameter of the rim + 2 times the thickness of the tire(!). Cars with larger rims usually have far thinner tires on them so the overall diameter stays almost the s

I could do that, please specify where you are going to click and what you'd expect to see. It will work every time but only for those exact steps! Scalability could be done but will cost you extra!

Heh, that blog post is funny. After step 6 the difficult work is done. Writing code is really not hard if you can define your goals clearly. If you're able to complete the first steps take a week off to learn programming and then build the

Maybe you aren't so hot either. Tell me, what do 19-inch and 21-inch specify? The outer diameter of the tire or the DIAMETER OF THE RIM?

Providing a time-limited version for testing certainly is legal. Just make sure your client knows this and it's in the contract. Display a notice like "Note: this beta version of the software will not run after 1-4-2013".

I'm not worried, judges in Europe are usually quite reasonable. Ask the judge for the python.co.uk while you're at it. I love Python, best of luck!

As a software developer I'd always try to unlock it. The user probably has a reason for pressing the button. Maybe your "is the door locked" sensor is broken? If you're afraid of overheating it wait a bit after the second try before enablin

I just found out about mining pools; interesting idea to spread the risk of not finding any bitcoins for a long time. Why would a user with such massive mining speed need this though? Wouldn't it be more efficient for him to bear the risk

OK, I'm going to pitch in: The button should be called "My Settings" (or just "Settings") because it's a command I'm shouting at the program. Compare with "Save"/"Open"/"Like". I want to open MY settings. If the settings can't be loaded the

Right, it may be a tiny bit better but it's still not easy to read. The only way to make it actually readable is with typedefs.

Neat, but this completely ignores the real reason people have trouble with small fonts: bad eyesight. The size the font needs to be is a factor of distance and eyesight. The real solution is to just use the default font size and have users
