As someone who only does functional programming I do not think their power lies in their erm functionality. I have a hypothesis. I think the key lies in how easy is it to look at your code and trigger the pathways in your brain associated w

I disagree in terms of Desktop. writing F# apps targetting .NET, mono or monomac is equivalent to C#. The only cost is some initial time with t < 2 hours to write a dsl to wrap your interface xaml to F# or for forms create a dsl for you

I think Scala is a wonderful language, however it is one of many. Data structure and collections support in scala is equivalent to any functional language. I would be interested in hearing where you think Scala offers more. F# is another fu

Agree. Can one say Mediumly Typed? To me a strongly typed language is very stern - you trade some slight annoyance for some slight sanity checks. For example strong typing would not let you say 5 + 5.0 because float <> int. >

Oh right I see. But don't you think introducing matrices as a type of transformation between vector spaces is too much too early? One reason maths is so difficult is that our brain simply has no point of comparison to bootstrap the concepts

I would like to share my experience with Scala and Android. Maybe someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. Speed and start up time does not appear to be a problem, even if you are using a good part of the library. The problem with scala i

I doubt brandonb thinks anything so simple. His post suggest a strong familiarity with the subject. I believe his emphasis is that previously, much of the structure learning was not discovered by the algorithm but hand tuned and built in ma

The new paper purports to deal with those criticisms. To my limited understanding it appears to be an argument against how the Hamiltonian is currently formulated in Verlinde's theory than a proof against entropic gravity.

You are right that many people don't need the results of type theory for their work. But that mainly tells on the type of work you do. For example many people think programming does not need math but if you are writing physics engines, grap
