If it makes you feel any better, the Earth is hit by something like 4000 cosmic rays a day with energies that are 760,000 times higher than those being generated at CERN. That is 7 × 10^15 events since the Earth was formed and it's sti

The idea of treadmill desks has been starting to float around my office and I've been pushing for it. Do you find that it generates much noise? Do you work with others in a typical open-office pit o' desks or in a private office?

I'm doing something similar to Starting Strength and I really enjoy it, but it's not the be-all end-all. If bodyweight exercises are your thing, more power to you. I have to disagree with you on the machines though. From what I&#x

When I arrived in California, I weighed a bit over 250lbs (I'm 6'3") and was grossly out of shape. I'm in my early 30s. Things I've been doing to improve my health: Improved my diet. This alone caused me to shed abo

I've been considering switching to i3 for similar reasons (plus configuring xmonad in Haskell is a bit of a pain as I'm not great at it). The only thing that is keeping me from doing it is the fact that i3 seems to bind workspaces

This was all in the Vancouver area, which is quite safe by North American standards. I doubt anyone in particular has it in for my wife, but she is certainly not short on bad luck!

There are non-monetary things you can lose. My wife was chased through her parents house at knifepoint by burglars. She locked herself in the bathroom and was on the phone with 911 as the burglars tried to kick the door in. They had almost

It'd be helpful if there was some way for people to collaborate using computers, or if facetime is what you want, some sort of shared room where you can talk without disturbing others who are working. Technology might get us there som

People in this thread have stated that they haven't seen any benefit from economic growth, and it is indeed possible that they haven't. The increase in income inequality has meant that economic growth has primarily benefited those

I don't see this being a viable product. 1) For a machine shop owner, you can already build such a "multi-shot gun" yourself quite trivially. I have a setup in my barn where I can spot-weld seven rifles together along the len

Because he doesn't want other people to waste part of their lives at Amazon? His experiences there mirror mine. I've warned people away from going there for exactly the same reason. Amazon treats their employees like shit.

Absolutely, there's room for harm reduction approaches as well. There's an approach called the Sinclair Method that uses counseling and a drug called Naltrexone with the goal of reducing episodes of heavy drinking, and I do know o

You're right, that last bit was a bit of uncalled-for ranting. I would edit it to remove it, but I think doing so would mess with some of the discussion that has gone on since my post.

Definitely talk to your doctor. It's not true to claim that there is no solid evidence suggesting that AA is not effective. There is a lot of shitty evidence both supporting and discrediting 12 step programs, and the author of the link
