There has been very little progress on forums since twitter and facebook grabbed the spotlight. Forums with moderation, up/down voting, usage limits (suspends you if you post too much too fast), reputations etc.. would be a start. Most impo

From the description of the site, it's not just like HN but like countless design forums that have existed for years, where people critiqued each others work. That's not what matters though. The quality of the designers, developers, startin

Note 1 is pretty important. If you're non-technical how do you know if your idea is technically challenging or not? In many cases you don't, even technical people often misjudge how challenging and idea can get. If it is challenging, you ge

These stick for programmers: do computers, startup, make money on the internet, websites, make iPhone apps. For designers: websites, logos, posters, ads. Lowest common denominator though.

It comes from spending time in some domain, like wikipedia, photo sharing, forums, shopping etc... You don't just come up with an idea out of the blue, you do something long enough and you'll have an idea in that domain and have a few hunch

So? It gets information from curated sources. The important part is how it reads and displays the information. That's their "experience." The computer voice they have sounds pretty natural, is that part of the OS or part of their service?

Well the string DSL is easier to read. Doesn't seem like there would be a lot of useful autocompletion with objects/classes either.

Strings? Not familiar with your specific needs, but generally prefer DSLs fine tuned to the task. Strings sound like they'll allow more flexibility for you, less hassle for developers to type and read. Objects and classes sounds like boiler

Yes these would be useful to me. What would the performance be like compared to other options like Java? You'd have to use the new typed arrays to have any hope of comparable performance right? This http://harthur.github.com/brain/ seems

Also your startup won't have to smell you. Full breakfasts and exercise help too. Also living in a sane country where you can go outside to buy some food, look at people who are genuinely satisfied with life could help, although those count

Usual meaning of regrets are things you really wanted to do at the time, had a chance to try, did not and didn't do anything else that was particularly exciting. Then felt a nagging about it your whole life, which only gets worse when you'r

Did the startup scene have a web presence where people used their real names? It does now, there are a lot of CETFOs on Quora using their real names, answering questions about startups. Lets see where that leads.

Probably say you're working on projects that do this or that, don't need to say it's a startup, could be an open source project, who knows.

Social organization should be harder to solve than finding dark energy and higgs bosons. It's a massively complex problem. Walled gardens grow stale, progressive communities fall apart. That's the natural order of things. The best thing to

seems like other HNers are saying the same thing as me. You could try an A/B test, see if you get more signups if you show tour or signup first. Or you could make the tour much shorter, 600px high, then have the signup form right below that
