I have a second webcam pointed straight down at my desk, and scribble with a pen on paper. Frankly, this works better than any of the digital tools I tried, despite not being collaborative. (I tried a number of them, and have both a drawing

There's the Open Source Photography Course by Riley Brandt. It's a bit outdated by now, but remains a very gentle and well-produced introduction to (an older version of) Darktable, and image editing in general. Highly recommend.

The point is, the UI looks vaguely similar to Lightroom, and many people come to Darktable expecting a free clone of Lightroom. Scores of these people then hit the forums and complain about "missing features" and "incorrect b

What you say is particularly true for image editing and Darktable especially: there are already tons of image editors available in all levels of dumbed-down-ness. Lightroom is actually one of the more complex tools, all things considered.

I teach a programming course and way too often I see students badly in need of more memory. Like, saving a text file taking minutes (I'm not making this up), and the student considering that normal. To these students, I recommend simpl

Does it now support using two monitors with different scaling factors? With display calibration? This is what is holding me back at the moment: heterogenous scaling is only available in wayland, but color calibration (colord-kde) only works

Frankly, Darktable does not mirror Lightroom in anything but the basic screen layout. Its tools are by and large entirely different. A few months ago, I tried to do a big comparison of RAW developers, maybe you'll find it interesting:

Isn't it funny how every. single. landscape photograph edited in Lightroom or Capture One has serious halos on the horizon and every contrasty transition? Thanks to Filmic and the Tone EQ, we can actually edit landscapes without these

There are great free LUTs out there that can emulate the Fuji film simulations quite well. That might be worth a try.

But where are those small cameras? Panasonic's GM series is all but abandoned, and the E-M10 is hardly small compared to a Fuji X-E3 or Canon M50. To me, that always felt like M43's Achilles heel; it promises to be small and light

To make the Gaussian blur look better, it needs to be applied to linear lightness, not to gamma-encoded colors, as it is done here. In reality, the blur is induced by the lens, on linear lightness, and only gamma-encoded afterwards. The eff

How would you make, say, a fourier transform or IIR filter design accessible to people who don't know any signal processing or complex numbers? You can spend years studying these topics and their related math. Entire text books have be
