I would describe myself as a pretty proficient and comfortable user of Vim and I have switched to Other Editors for short and long periods of time. Really, switching text editors is like switching languages: Every time you learn a new langu

The thing about Emacs is really its extensibility. There is simply no other text editor out there that can open a single C/C++ source file and automatically infer all tags (even of included headers) without any kind of project set up. That

This could be my story, even though in the end (after Textmate, then Vim), Emacs tempted me more than Sublime Text and I eventually switched back to it from Sublime Text 2. There is too much accredited awesomeness in Emacs (and to a somewha

Well, consider GUI libraries like Qt, GTK or Cocoa. Cocoa in particular does not have any concept of a user modifyable "theme" or "style". However, it changes its looks with OS upgrades and all GUI applications change with it. With static l

I think Apple could have reached the pinnacle of its life. Maybe it is not such a great idea to start there now. It certainly has a few more productive years to go, but it feels like the decline might be in sight.

Hmm, I did not like the idea initially, but then I started thinking of how Emacs and (more importantly) Sublime Text work ... I must say, this very system works amazingly well for Sublime Text, why am I presuming that it is an automatic fai

The problem is not copyright itself. The problem is that the creators are not the copyright owners any more. This is a very subtle distinction. We should do all we can to help creators, not publishers. Publishers have their place in the dis

This post is so deeply antisocial it makes me sad. Maybe I am just not born to be a programmer like he is, but I invariably have more fun and I am more productive and creative when working with other people. That said, I enjoy how he so poi

It's funny how your argument can be applied just as meaningfully to most of the comments here. We all agree, but no-one can prove it.

How can there ever be a legislative tool to fight foreign pirates? By definition, national laws only ever work within one's own border. Isn't it sad to see how hard a time governments have with coping with internationalization?

Damn it, I was so sure that 2012 would be The Year of Linux on the Desktop. And now this! Kidding aside, there will always be IPhones/Playstations, which need to be jail broken and there will be proper computers. If anything, this UEFI lock

I tried several times and failed several times. What won me over in the end was the need to do some project management and the discovery of Org-Mode. Those checkboxed lists and tables are pure magic. So what I really needed was a use case t

There are ways to achieve arbitrary upscaling without loss of information (e.g. FFT-based). It would be interesting if TVs out there utilize such methods or if they scale using some simple interpolation scheme.

To be fair, WordPad (Windows) and TextEdit (Mac) do come bundled with the OS and are perfectly usable as word processors (RTF style). I'm not saying that they approach the feature set of MS Office, OpenOffice, LibreOffice or iWork, but for
