I definitely see the checkerboard at slightly-closer-than-normal distances. Like, slightly less than a 30 cm / 1 foot. Maybe that is because I am slightly short sighted? I don't know.

I recently bought an S III and gave it back. At least on my device, the back cover felt cheap and flimsy. But more importantly, that PenTile screen just looked terrible to me. I constantly noticed a faint checkerboard pattern in bright surf

Then again, you could probably go for a similar goal using mathematics.

I, for one, am getting a bit bored with solarized. I am looking forward to a fresh coat of paint! Not because solarized is bad, just because I like variety.

Awesome! Having a color theme available for most/all tools I use is amazingly useful! I have been looking for such an alternative to Solarized for a while!

The only downside to Fusion is that it is usually a bit buggy right after the release. But they are also extremely quick to fix those bugs shortly thereafter. Also, I am extremely impressed with their support. (How does that compare to Para

Funny. I just had a call from a very nice VMWare customer service agent after a few days of exchanging emails: Office 2013 on Win 8 has graphical glitches in Fusion 5 if 3D acceleration is enabled. While he did not have a fix for me, he did

You mean, no regex incremental search, single character undo and no split views? Yeah, works beautifully. There are too many alternatives that overtook TM quite a while ago. Look at Chocolat for kinda Textmate-done-right, or Sublime Text 2

I completely agree with you as far as functionality is concerned. Both platforms have an abundance of apps for almost every possible application (hah, I used 'app' and 'application' with different meanings in one sentence!)/ That said, I fe

Unless, of course, you were to look at amazon.de, where the book is just as freely available as at amazon.co.uk or amazon.com. At least it was a few hours ago. Now it is back to its normal price.

Except that it is dog slow, horribly out of date, neither really compatible with Windows nor Unix paths, and lacking support for graphical stuff. Well, I use msys and eshell instead, which I find less jarring.

I was going to leave a snarky comment with just a list of awful OSX applications here. But then I looked at a list of the applications I have installed and... Well, while many of them might be bad, their usual alternatives on Windows aren't

I absolutely agree. I actually prefer the graphical shell of Windows 7 to the one of OSX Lion. But Windows does not have a Unix terminal. And I think that is the main point here: Linux might lack design graphically, but the Linux command li

Yes! I would go so far as to say that almost all the most important revelations I had programming-wise where when I learned a new language and suddenly gained a new way of looking at everything I know. And the nice thing about this is, you

While graphical debuggers are great overall, there are times when I prefer to get down to the command line and do my debugging there. And quite surprisingly, I don't lose much efficiency there, either. But then, this could be the story of m

Pretty much all programming languages out there were designed with QWERTY layout in mind. You see, who in his right mind would make brackets more easily reachable than parenthesis? Hence, many many developers use a US layout instead of thei

I agree that an IDE does not separate from the need to know how stuff works. But I certainly know a few programmers who do not dare to think beyond what their IDE allows them to do. They use built-in wizards and refactorings, but they do no

Sure, I can elaborate. The idea is that as a programmer, you have to have an intimate understanding of what is going on in order to make the machine do your bidding quickly and correctly. But that mediocre Eclipse user I caricaturized does

In my experience many Java programmers don't really "program" Java. They are more like "expert Eclipse users" and Eclipse happens to output Java. This style of development makes heavy use of wizards and those Eclipse refactoring tools. This

Ruby is cool. REPLs are cool. Objective-C is slightly weird. Interface builder is kind of nice. XCode is weird, but has some fairly great features for Objective-C/Cocoa. But Cocoa is the thing you have to learn no matter what. To be honest,

We have successfully used Lua on a Blackfin processor in one embedded project. It worked just fine as long as you did not use it for real-time tasks.

Don't you miss chunked undo? Incremental regex search and replace? Those were my main reasons to look for alternatives, back in the day. I have not looked back, ever.

I'm confused: Is racket a fully-compliant scheme? If not, which scheme should I use? And, what is racket? I could not quite find that information on the Wikipedia/website.
