Nothing like figuring out another way to kill your browser :)

Hehe. I wish OSX had individual program volume controls... On Windows 7 I usually have flash process volume on 'off', unless I'm specifically watching something.

That was fun! I just got in to work so I was properly sleeping. I also rarely use typeof, so I had to look up that 'integer' and 'array' do not exist :) Also, what was really annoying is the use of 'i' for the

If Ken Thompson is Newton of Computer Science (as opposed to say, unix), who is Niklaus Wirth?

He doesn't even have to use bitbucket, it sounds like he can just create another github project. I think he's not asking for alternatives though, just explaining the situation and calling attention to it. PS I am also a bug fan of

Hm, so I just tried it. I have the latest Mac mini (i5 8GB RAM), and it was slow. Switching between files, highlighting lagged. Typing was stuttery. Next, I couldn't change the font, it was just not selecting. So, looks like cool softw

Yeah, I'm not denying geopolitics, just the emphasis as was described.

I think my point is that being the first to plant a flag on the moon is not space exploration. You think Voyager 2 trumps the entire Soviet unmanned space program, and I think I would prefer all the papers and progress made by Soviet progra

I'm kind of at a loss for words. Are you including the past 20 years USSR did not exist in your comparison with US? I remember the timeline of lunches, if you start in 60s, overall it was much more densely packed for USSR compared to U

I think you have it backwards in the first paragraph. A general misunderstanding of this 'weird universe' is that 'politics' declared science and technology as the top goals, and the entire soviet planned economy revolve

I was being sarcastic at the end. I think the article was very uninformative and painted a completely incomplete picture there.

What do you mean by 'own memory arena' and what is the performance (or other) difference between that and global heap?
858.
by Demiurge 13y ago
When you say "structs and their string values are individually malloc'ed, worsening the performance", I call this "sporadic". Maybe it's the wrong word, if I was to use a single word. My second question is, can

by Demiurge 13y ago
How much difference does sporadic malloc make these days? What is the loss in performance compared to the overhead of virtual memory, randomization and whatnot, assuming OS is also trying to optimize?

That's probably not as big of a detriment as the high level functionality Windows expects to be in the filesystem layer that unix doesn't (or puts in VFS). From what I read, this is why Microsoft themselves have a hard time repla

I think you can reconcile them the same way as these two statements. > I did not shoot anyone. > You can take the gun, so I won't be able to shoot anyone. They don't need to be reconciled because they are not in conflict.

I agree, and the main irritant has to be OSX and its refusal to do any hinting or 'sharpening' at lower point sizes. I hoped the retina will make it better, but amazingly, it doesn't quite enough, fonts still look too fat and

What I really like about Source Code Pro is that it has a 'Light' version, which looks absolutely perfect on OSX with its fatty font rendering. Before this, I used to always have t acclimate between Ubuntu and OSX and Windows, but

Considering I think C++ has many problems because it is overly complex because it grew on top of a very low level language, I have to say I can't agree with your statement. Just because something has features, doesn't mean it&#x27

I spent this Thursday and Friday migrating a pretty complicated site from 2 to 3, and boy it is a pain. My word of advice to anyone reading, do not use v3 for a desktop oriented website unless you specifically desire new hybrid grid system.
