Not sure if serious, but assert only makes sense in cases where you want to switch off the tests at some point right?

As a designer it's pretty much hopeless to switch to Linux I'm afraid.

That website is glorious :). Yeah, I think this might go a bit far. Scratch's community sadly isn't so big, further fragmentation won't help that much I think. And the platform doesn't make a very solid impression to me. That's why I like g

Ah scratch. Some years ago I wanted to show what cool stuff you can do with computers to a 10y old boy. Found scratch and actually got hooked myself for a bit ^^. Ended up with this (slightly embarassing thing): http://scratch.mit.edu/proj

It IS the user's problem as he will be forced to use MS Office for most documents where there are other people involved. Note: Both google docs and iWorks handle this significantly better.

My tests haven't finished yet, but I can this this much about the performance: HMPP, while not having a very complete implementation yet, have quite a simple code generation concept (thus generating a low overhead) and the performance is ac

In C++ everything is an object? Since when? Or are you only calling the added "++" components "C++" but not the included C syntax? As for me, I don't call myself a [insert language]-developer. I use whatever language suits best to design so

I get your point, however Java came after C++, its usage of "new" is however more consistant IMO. In that regard I don't see what either language designers could have done. This post, if I understand it correctly, was a plea to language des

I like your summary. I'd like to point out, though, that if you want a unified codebase, you might want to have a look at OpenACC. It's still young and you need commercial compilers (PGI, HMPP or Cray), but the capabilities are interesting.

The thing is that Apple's turnover in the beginning of the 2000s was following a period of stagnation in PC innovation. Microsoft simply did not have to innovate in the OS department and for that reason, they didn't really at least since Wi

btw why /usr? I get it that in unix legacy it started as the users folder, but won't this be confusing as hell for all people that have come to know it as unix system resources? Why not /users?

Looking at this list I can't really tell why this is supposed to be better. Shedding complexity ok - but getting rid of many shorthands that are there for a reason? It reminds me of how Java wanted to replace printf with a ridiculously comp

30C in such an arid climate is actually quite nice - as long as you have enough water with you. But you never feel sweaty, water from your body just immediately dries away.

It's getting exciting. Imagine if the moon landings would be taking place with today's mass communication capabilities. Hope I can live through the next such event (heck even an asteroid would do).

Want good WYSIWYG html? Try out Apple Pages, export to E-Pub, extract and look at the xhtml files. After pretty printing it's almost like human authored. It seems that we still need the Apples and Adobes of this world.

I never understood what they wanted to do with Unite. A browser might also be a good E-Mail client, but an OS? As long as you can't boot directly into it like Chrome OS, it doesn't make much sense IMO.

Just some days ago I tried to sign up to Hulu on my wife's macbook and suddenly the input fields didn't work anymore. It's probably a bit of an outdated version (10.x), but still.

Opera seems to face the chicken and egg problem. Many websites that are specifically optimized for some browsers don't work on Opera. They don't consider opera for its low user numbers. And users are not not easily attracted to a feature ri

Here's the key feature of Numbers vs. Excel: It not only has multiple Sheets, but multiple tables per sheet. Besides tables you can for example add text fields and images to a sheet. This makes it much much more natural to create reports an
